Because most of them are losers and got themselves in that situation. They could be drug addicts and lazy not wanting to get a job. There are people from different countries that work real hard and why can't these american homeless do the same? Instead they're freeloaders and mooching off of my taxes.

Homelessness is a complicated social and health issue, not just an economic one. Even the homeless in America have a better standard of living than the starving in Africa--food is widely available here, even if you are destitute, as is emergency shelter. In other words, huge amounts of public and private money are spent on homeless here, but it's not an easy problem to fix. Many homeless are coping with acute mental health and or drug or alcohol problems. They are a population resistant to easy solutions, and public funds tend to go where they are most effective so politicians can take credit for success. Some people are in crisis and homelessness is temporary, and municipalities differ in how well they address that. Still, shelters exist, as do soup kitchens and job training programs. As bad as it is here it is much worse for people in the developing world.

People in this country have no real compassion, no understanding. I've been homeless. Believe me I am not lazy, and it sickens me to read some of the answers you've been given by others. All it takes is an illness, a catastrophic event such as a car accident, a flood, fire, or factory closing- and any one of you could be on the streets yourselves!

In this country almost everything is based on $, capitalism, and if you're not successful financially you're worthless. That's the sad truth of the matter! Oh, not everyone is that way. Just enough to matter. More are apathetic. As long as it's not them.....

Unfortunately, many homeless have addiction or psychological problems. Help is there, but they won't seek it out. The long term homeless are rarely just down on their luck. For various reasons, they can't assume responsibilities or hold down jobs. They can barely do enough to survive. Since it's not a criminal offense and they are no danger to others, they may be treated for a short period and then released back onto the streets. They may be given shelter and then suddenly leave. I don't believe it's just an issue of money or lack of caring.

Hello! I can tell you we have the same view for years we have always had homelessness and people continue to turn their heads. As if it won't ever happen to them. We have many resources here and our country help many people overseas. I do know that lots of christian organizations help here in the usa to help people. especially homeless ones. my heart goes out to them God said'' That we will always have homeless people with us. We are to help them.. the least that you do unto them you do unto me. So when I'm on the transit or in the truck I have to stop if it's to feed some or to give them money. when I have it. We also have elderly people barely making ends meat, also single parents too. we all need to do something in our own community. walk up and down our sidewalks and collect non perishables and find a pantry to give these can goods or toiletries too. We are few but we can get the ball rolling with God all things are possible!!!

I think it is because the homeless people in this country are just too lazy. They could get a job and help themselves but instead wish to be useless and wait around for handouts. There are plenty of jobs here in the US they could do. In other countries, there are not many jobs.

America is a place where EVERYONE can get a job even if that person did not get alot of education... so it is pretty much that person's choice if he or she is in that bum situation... I am not saying everyone chooses to be homeless, but I don't think a person who will take charge of their life and work hard in America will be in such a bad position...

As opposed to those 'other' countries where even college graduates don't have a job, they have no choice, therefore they deserve the help given to them...

I beg to differ. I live in the Northwest, and here we take care of the homeless as long as they stay clean.

I had a mental problem and ended up homeless for 33 days. The VA found me and found me a shelter. They helped me get and apt.

I had a friend and she stayed in a shelter for over 90 days when they found her a place to live.

Now you can't do drugs or drink in the shelter, but you have a clean room and no one hurts you.

Gorge Carlin already cleared that up for us bro, good question.
But I think there will be varied opinions on this subject some will say its the rich yuppie cock suckers and others will say that the home less want to be that way. I think it can't be summed up in a few words, its some thing that should be talked about.

I was once asked for money so this guy could "get some food" because he was starving. I did not want to GIVE him money, so I offered to buy him food and he refused.....That's why!!! They would rather get drunk on cheap wine. I bet if they spent as much time applying for jobs as they do begging they would probably have more money than all of us!!!!!
