Hmm. Aside from learning what we've seen our parents and other adults do, I'll think about it as if it's the *first time.* :-)
I'd say it's just a natural desire to be as close as possible to the object of our affection. We look each other in the eye probably more than any other part of the body when we're in love. We move closer together... we embrace... hey, our lips (and noses) are touching. It kinda feels nice... we keep doing it.
Our lips are very sensitive to touch. And hey, there's the other aspect of our mouths: we *eat* things that look good! I'm not speaking sexually, but sensually. A baby is always putting things that fascinate him/her in her mouth. Along with sight and sound, it's one of the primary ways we sense our world, and the people in it.
And maybe our distant ancestors sort of "tasted" their way around more than we do.
Or maybe we just (again, since we were embracing, already) wanted to get -- and give -- more sensation. Lips are soft and pleasant to rub or have rubbed against you!
:-)
From a more modern, slightly more "conscious" perspective, I think a kiss shows all of the sensuality above, and is your way of telling your loved one that they are allowed to be as close to you as possible (without going further, here). It's saying, I trust you touching me and tasting me and smelling me, and in the awkward/exciting prior seconds, looking me very closely in the eye -- seeing how much I love you!

I think it is because it is considered to be a very personal thing to share. Your mouth. Two intersecting mouths exploring each other while the minds of both people are probably having similar thoughts and it can stir up emotions as well. For a lot of people, a kiss is even more personal than sex. That's why some players and whores don't want to kiss during sex. It promotes emotional attachment . It makes many people feel closeness to each other, and some want that, but some don't. My wife and I have soul-kisses. It's all expressed in the way the kiss is shared. It is deeper than holding someone close. It is internal and it is sharing a part of yourself, sometimes sharing part of your soul with someone.
Plus, you shouldn't really make love any old place you want with someone - it's not proper, but a kiss is!

I've heard that it because humans produce pheromones from the pores of the face, and that kissing is an evolved response to access the subconscious information that those pheromones provide, such as mating compatibility. But I'm sure there's more to it than that. For instance, allowing someone next to your face is like a non-verbal signal that you like that person, or at least accept them.

I'm not sure, but I love hugs too!
I think maybe because it is such a skin sensitive area, where you can really feel.
Also maybe because it is the place where someone's voice comes out, so when you meet up with it, it subconciously feels like your sharing a bit of their soul, up close and personal.
Also when you kiss someone on their lips you are very close to their eyes/face and their eyes can meet yours, like the window to their soul. So it's a very personal way of showing your love.

I believe we do use our lips to a point to show our love but, I believe the lip thing is more affection then love. We hsow or can show our love for others in soooo many different ways. I mean we love our grandma's,uncles, aunts, cousins ect. but we don't show it w/our lips. love can be shown in many ways and you don't even need lips to do it!

I read that a disproportionately large area of the brain is dedicated to sensation in the mouth area.
