I am not quite sure what you are asking, but an improper fraction is where you write what is whole and what is part of a whole (i.e. whole = 3 feet, part = 6 inches or 1/2 foot, improper fraction = 3 1/2 feet). I hope this helps.

get your common denominator-- exampl-- if the distance is 1.5 miles- then the .5 is 1/2-- right? ok, then the common denominator is 2-- that is the bottom #,,,,
so-- if that is true then 1 (whole)= 2/2 so----add 1/2 plus 2/2= 3/2-- an improper fraction because the top# is higher than the denominator.
