I would send an entire generation of Americans to University. I am crippled by my student loans and I feel that it is totally rediculous that the US spends more money on weapons than the combined GNP of 70% of the world, but I have to break myself to get a friggen education.
Any ideas on how I can make extra cash to pay 'em off? Anyone out there want to pay them for me?

Since I place devotion to family first, I would pay off all the debts of all the members of my family ... ONCE! Then I would do essentially the same thing Warren did and donate all except a million to charity. The extra million would go into a trust fund for my grandchildren.

BTW ... it was 40 Billion, not 30, but who's qubbling about a mere 20 Billion? :D

If I had that kind of money I would first invest in a better education for my children. Build a bigger church. Then I would buy new furniture for our home. I would help all of my family members and in-law get out of their financial debt. I would also buy several different properties and build homes to help shelter homeless people and have the homes set up in a educational manner so that these people can become more educated and stable in order to find a job and maintain that job so they can get out in the world and function to take care of themselves and or family.

Same thing he did; I'd give away 85% and keep 15% for me to spend any way I damn well like. That means nice houses in mulitple locations, expensive vehicles, a plane, a boat, you get the drift...

And I might put what's left over to good use, starting businesses, etc.

Get rid of it as quickly as possible! Buffet is doing the right thing. Imagine the family squabbles if he died and left that kind of fortune up for grabs -- even the best of us would soon disgrace ourselves to get a piece of it....

I'd do pretty much the same as he did.Save enough so that I could live ok for the rest of my life. If my kids were ok I would save some for them, but not so much that they get lazy. If they were spoiled, I wouldn't give them anything except for some money to go to school.

Well, I wouldn't give it to Bill Gates' foundation. I'd make sure my family never had to want for anything, including myself (but not in a materialistic manner), then give the rest to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

For Myself/My Family:

1. Continue my work in HIV/AIDS prevention, but get an electric or otherwise environmentally friendly car to drive to work in.

2. Ensure that my father's apartment was more handicapped accessible.

3. Fund college educations for my mother and brother, and pay off my student loans.

4. Purchase a home with solar panels, with filtered air, with an organic garden, with rooms for all my family and friends, with a great kitchen for communal cooking, and with a Japanese-style bath-tub.

For My Community/Nation:

1. Sponsor a local voter registration drive.

2. Use the influence that would come with having such money to encourage the Detroit metro area to develop a better system of public transportation, especially one that would serve the needs of people with disabilities and one that would end urban/suburban racial segregation.

3. Sponsor 50 students from the U.S. each year, to go and live in another country, to participate in learning a different language/political system/set of values/etc. and then have them come back to share their learnings with not only their peers, but with our government, the United Nations, and our educational system (I would really hope they could suggest some reforms).

For Humanity:

1. Make thousands of micro loans to women in third world nations, whose simple ability to purchase a portable stove or a weaving loom or a garden plot, would enable them to support their families for years to come.

2. Committ myself to ending genocide in Darfur.

3. Pressure prescription drug companies to make HIV/AIDS drugs cheaper and more accessible to the people of Africa.

4. Committ myself to making the education of women a global priority!
