Ambition, self-motivation, and a great willingness to work VERY HARD.
AND not throwing away their money on all the toys and games that the common person feels that they MUST have today !!!! Buy your brand new car, boat, snowmobiles, motorcycles, etc ONLY after you can really afford them !!!

Assuming, they didn't just have the money fall on their lap and they worked for it, there are a few common characteristics described in the famous book _The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People._
-Be Proactive
-Begin with the End in Mind
-Put First Things First
-Think Win/Win
-Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood
-Synergize
-Sharpen the saw
In general, successful people will have some or all of these habits. It's a decent read if you haven't read it already.

How does Bush or Osama lack common sense? You may not like their politics, but doesn't mean they lack common sense. Obviously somewhere down the line they went above and beyond common sense, else they wouldn't be rich.

own a house, own a lake house, own a beach house, own a boat/yacht, own purebred dogs, grow orchids for a hobby, wear jeans, drink good wine in moderation, take vacation time seriously because I am away from my money/business, take good care of myself--want to live forever to keep making more money.............................I am right because I have more than you...
