I work in the Education Department of our local zoo where I work with small alligators, skinks, snakes, sudan plated lizards, turtles etc. One thing that you should remember is that all wild animals have a mouth and teeth and can and will bite at some point. Nothing is a little more tolerant of kids. These animals are wild animals and anything can set them off. If you insist on having a wild animals around your children start with a turtle.

Leopard Gecko would be the most simple and easy to take care of. Plus they don't mind the handling. Bearded Dragons are next, they have a bit more of a personality but they have a larger menu for their diet.
Easiest reptile all together? Snakes...^__^
Do your research though before choosing. Search sites, books, and go to your pet store and talk to the reptile specialists...they'll be happy to help you choose the right pet for you ^__^
Mmm sidenote: everyone keeps mentioning turtles...you will find those to be the hardest to maintaine. Dirty lil' reps they are ^__~ The blue tongued skink mentioned earlier...mm shouldn't really put a rep outside; although I will admit they are good pets, probably not the best for a beginner though.

Crested geckos require an ambient temperature around 77 degrees or so which is usually the average room temp, they need a ten gallon tank when fully grown and they eat crickets and baby food. They're really really easy to care for and do not normally require a heat lamp so they're cheaper in general. They're also very hardy and enjoy being handled. They don't get very large as well so they're probably the easiest to care for and to learn to care for so they are probably the best for beginners that want a good pet that will live a while with proper care (average around 12-14 years).
any other questions about the geckos feel free to email me.

I used to love the turtle across the street from me as a kid but he wasn't very interesting. Lizards are definitely better as far as "non-furry" pets go. Try an Argentinian black and white tegu. If you handle it a lot from a young age, it'll tolerate children really well. They require a kind of large cage, though -- but it's definitely worth it. Let your kids help pick it out, they'll really like that.

i have found that African fat tail geckos are one of the best first reptiles i ever had they have a gentle disposition they are easy to care for : a large tank with a good UV lighting a large rock for exercise and cave for hiding,a large water bowl for drinking and swimming and some crickets and you have a great pet they don't mind being handled and i do recommend handle alot give them loving care and they give it back.my experience comes from owning several and working in a pet shop as their reptile lady.

bearded dragon! they are absolutely awesome. they are very sweet too. they are pretty easy to take care of. i think the best thing to feed them is worms. crickets are good but they seem to bother the bearded dragon and could probably harm it. They are tolerant of kids and they do not grow too big. i think a bearded dragon would be the perfect reptile for you. I have one and she great!

i like my new bearded dragon, it is very tame and loves people. it seems to have a little something more in it's head than other lizards, more pet-like and less just something to look at. they can really hang out with you!
