What exactly is meant by the separation of church and state has always been controversial. The founding fathers used a generic "God" with the idea that there were different religions but all believed in some kind of God. Then atheists felt slighted. And of course, there are so many different concepts of "God", that no matter what there's someone who'll disagree. So, it goes back and forth and will continue to do so, as long as man thinks for himself and is not exactly like every other man.
Personally, the basic concept behind the 10 commandments- the message they convey- really isn't all that controversial. All those things are covered by our laws, so what's the big deal about putting them in writing and posting them in your schools and courthouse.... Well, there wouldn't be any problem with it, if it didn't come from a religious text. If it was written in a law book or our consitution, it would be accepted. But because it's from a religious text, it defies the separation of church and state and can possibly offend people who worship using a different religious text.

The reason God is not allowed in schools today is because our founding fathers did not write our U.S. Constitution carefully and well enough. Our U.S. Constitution is insufficient for a healthy society. Never did our founding fathers realize that judges would be legislating from the bench with impunity and never did they realize that American society would choose to kill its young, or allow homosexuals to redefine the definition of "marriage".
The only reason God is still on our currency and in the courts today is because removing God from the courts at this time would probably cause a civil war. So, why has God been removed from the schools? Because evil is slowly and deceitfully destroying the fabric of America........ what better way than to teach young Americans that God does not play an important role any longer: Instead, truth becomes an abstract, lacking character and substance. This has already become evident by the acceptance of President Clinton's behavior. And the day may come when the majority of Americans are so evil that the truth is no longer important..... it may become more and more acceptable to lie in court (no oath needed). And the minority who prefer to speak the truth will be scoffed at and enslaved.

OK, I've got to jump in here...
First: I attended school in rural Indiana - part of the Bible belt - a LONG time ago (starting in 1962), and neither I nor my parents (who graduated in 1936 and 1940, respectively) ever remember the 10 commandments OR hymns being in schools. There WAS, however, the Golden Rule.
Secondly, all myths are predicated on the idea that something that cannot otherwise be explained MUST have come from a Supreme Being or God (justified by statements such as "life is just too complex....").
The idea that we cannot come up with an answer to satisy everyone simply gives credence to that line of thought for those so inclined.
Have you ever received a flu vaccine before flu season? If you have, then you have tacitly accepted evolution as a fact. (horrors!)
Of course, anyone can think whatever they so choose - thankfully the U.S. isn't a theocracy!

1) The Bible in Court is used only for swearing oaths and anybody who chooses not to use it may avoid using it, they don't swear an oath on the bible then, instead the "affirm that they will tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth." So there is no breach of the separation of church and state here because use of the bible is not required. Also the idea is that you swear on what you think is important, for Christian types its swearing before god and for non christian and other non-religious types its swearing on your honor.
2) In God We Trust is a motto, it doesn't say what God--it could mean Allah, it could mean some amorphous creator--it doesn't say In Jehova We Trust, it doesn't say "In The Christian God We Trust" it doesn't even say "In Jupiter We Trust." So its not promoting any particular religion. The Constitution only says that the Government Shall make no law promoting or restricting religion. I don't see where a motto on money is either promoting religion or restricting it. Furthermore the US Supreme Court has said that the motto on a coin is merely a recognition of the cultural history of the majority....and not a promotion of religion.
You really need to study our history and the law before you start raising simple mottos as proof that there is no separation between church and state. AND, there are more important and significant things to point to if you want to make this a real debate.

God has been present in the halls of government and schools since this nation's founding. The first Congress was opened with hours of prayer to God for guidance. So was the Supreme Court. Both still are. Moses is engraved with the Ten Commandments on the Supreme Court building.
Communists (who founded the ACLU, look it up) and other Leftist groups are trying to eliminate God as our supreme grantor of Rights because that would give them the power to then meddle with our Rights. They cannot tolerate any authority higher than themselves.
The phrase 'separation of church and state' is not found anywhere in the Constitution. Rather, freedom of religious expression is found there as well as a prohibition against the Congress making any law regarding an establishment of religion. Where the phrase 'separation of church and state' is found is in the letters exchanged between Jefferson and the Baptist Church that feared Government might try to meddle in religious affairs.
Jefferson made clear that government could not, in any way, interfere with free religious expression.
As usual, Leftists cling to one little part of a sentence, 'separation of church and state', not even found in the Constitution, then DECEIVE one generation after another into thinking that is some sort of principle to be found in the Constitution as well as DECEIVE the public about what it really means.
What the Constitution's First Amendment means, dear readers, is that Government is subservient to God, not the other way around.

The separation of church and state is a "good" thing, because for a religion, a church any church to get a hold of power, that kind of power of the government is to much power, it has in history [this word is better said as His-story] resulted in the death and imprisonment of God's people, there is not anything anyone can do to stop a prayer in school, you can offer a silent prayer to God and who is to know, but when someone state controlled says "you will pray" than someone is going to have to say "how and to who, which way to pray" and what if that is not how someone believes, do you see the problem, matters of religious beliefs are best kept private.

Accually if you really look around and think about it you will reilize that there is a God! if there is no God then how did we get here? dont even get me started on evolution because there is not a shread of evidence for it. i mean really.. matter cant be created or destroy- a science law, ok then who made matter? the big bang therory has absolutly no evidence to support it, none..its all in there minds.
the Bible teaches the God created the world and set everything into motion. the Bible is scientifically, mathamatically, historicaly correct . and there are muliply reasons a person should belive the bible. its just not logical to say that there is no God when everything around us is so complex and wonderfully made!

No. did you do not ignore that God made a clean set for Moses to contemporary to the persons? This seems to point to the very undeniable actuality that He meant precisely what He wrote in the first ones. Exodus 34 the hot Stone pills a million The LORD suggested to Moses, "Chisel out 2 stone pills like the first ones, and that i will write on them the phrases that were on the first pills, that you broke.

Because this country is hypocritical. Students have the option of saying the Pledge or whatever. They dont have to say it. I dont believe in the Christian God and my 2nd grade teacher used to have us say the Lord's Prayer. Also, when they say "In God we trust" it doesnt refer to a God in specific. It can mean to a Christian the Christian God, to a Muslim Allah, a pagan- whatever. The country was founded upon freedom of religion.
