Check the link below / all cooling systems (heat exchangers) are the same in operation / just the how's change.

The link below is very detailed and even made my mom understand how it all works (why retype what has already been done).

it works by compression and expansion of gas

As the refrigerant is compressed, it heats up.
As it is decompressed , it cools down
Fans blow the cool air at you

That is it, in a nutshell.
