Put it this way:most of the inventions we use went through a male dominated process. Male dominated values of whats a good idea or not.I think its a bit hard to a man to be out thought by a woman, I would think this would carry into her opportunity to have her invention come to fruiton.
There are many female scientists in archeology(SUE), marine biology,
those studying animal behaviour and teaching a monkey or ape sign language and then finding out the monkey could make short sentences of his own, there are microbiologists. And on. It depends on what science you are looking at, if you are looking at well known, male scientists and discoveries only.
The genders are equally intelligent. But I believe complimentary. Which balances out our world.
I'm not sure if there is particularly male dominance in one area for men and another for females. In the past, (and WAY PAST) there may have been little opportunity for a genius female. It seems with thought now that women are maybe more humanitarian-working with "LIFE" than "THINGS". Yo, since Einstein flunked school, who knows, maybe there was a silent woman behind him.
There really is a very very fine line between creative genius and idiot.
But I like this question, even if I havent phrased my answer as well-its way past my bedtime. I'm going to keep up with the answers.

It depends on your definition of intelligence.
According to nearly all scientific surveys women (as a whole) possess higher IQ then men.
Men on the other hand can track many more objects then women. So, for example (and these statistics are imaginary as I no longer have my resources available) if a woman can track 5 moving objects at once then a man can track 10. That is the real reason that men are better at sports and the stereotype that men are better drivers then women.
The problem is that both culture and evolution gets in the way of a woman in intellectual fields. Our culture is still male dominated and that is of course a very large factor. But many other factors are also involved. Men are naturally more competitive and less family oriented then women. So a smarter women will not feel as strong a competitive drive to succeed as a man and in many cases family life and a maternal instinct will cause a woman to willingly reduce her work hours and focus instead on family, friends and children.

Not trying to be a feminist, but those you mentioned lived in a time when women were not given the education or time to invent. Nevertheless I don't think you can generalize the sexes that way. Some women are smarter, some men are. Think Einstein - it is all relative!

Men, because of their physical superiority (yes, I said that) have always tended to dominate. That doesn't make them smarter.
Only the most recent generation of women has really had anything close to equal opportunity to compete. Women have traditionally been the ones caring for children and holding down the home fronts while men have gone out into the world and had more opportunities. Again, that doesn't mean that they're smarter.
As roles change in society you see women making more of a difference.
Look at people in third world countries. They're dealing with famine, floods, drought, earthquakes, disease... get them out of that environment and you can see them blossom as their innate ability is allowed to flourish. It's the same thing, really.

These kind of questions always bring a sad smile to my face...
Why should there be any comparison?
One horse can be faster than another but comparing a horse to a zebra just doesn't make sense.
Men are different from women.
Each gender has its strength and weaknesses.
Each has its share of intelligent and simple people.
When will women and men learn that we are meant to complement and not compete with each other

The woman is all ways the back bone of any man. We just allow men to think they are the greatest. A mans ego would never let him overcome his pride. Most men can't see past their selves to give woman the credit of being a soupier being. Good thing you are not paid to think.

I remember ready that a females period hinders their ability to function at full capacity(especially with numbers), thus giving males weeks every year as a head start
