Bluetooth is a wireless standard. On Cellular phones it is used to have a wireless connection between your phone and a device such as a headset (those little roach looking things people put in their ear and talk to). Some wireless providers will even allow you to use the bluetooth wireless technology to sync your phone to your computer (providing your computer has a bluetooth transceiver).
However Bluetooth technology is used on all sorts of electronic devices (laptops, PDAs, phones, etc...) anything that has a need to communicate with something else could use bluetooth as a wireless means of communication. For instance I have a laptop computer with a wireless mouse and a wireless portable printer (both use bluetooth as their wireless standard for communication). It is a very interesting technology which is based on digital encryption broadcasted across low bandwidth radio frequencies.

To make it simple, blue tooth is the technology whereby different devices are connected by a wireless network.
Read below:
Bluetooth is an industrial specification for wireless personal area networks (PANs), also known as IEEE 802.15.1. Bluetooth provides a way to connect and exchange information between devices like personal digital assistants (PDAs), mobile phones, laptops, PCs, printers and digital cameras via a secure, globally unlicensed short range radio frequency.
The name Bluetooth was born from the 10th century king of Denmark, King Harald Bluetooth (whose surname is sometimes written as Bluetooh), who engaged in diplomacy which led warring parties to negotiate with each other. The inventors of the Bluetooth technology thought this a fitting name for their technology, which allowed different devices to talk to each other.[1]. The name of the king in Danish was Harald Blåtand and the Bluetooth logo is based on the H and B runes.

Its a short distance high frequency radio signal that communicates between devices that support that technology, once you pair two or more devices together they communicate between each other allowing information to be shared between each other, its a bit like 4 people using their phone to have a phone conference, you can all hear each other at the same time. The distance is very short usually only about 10m from each device. I use a bluetooth headset for my mobile phone, which is nice as there are no wires, only radio waves.

Blue Tooth technology is a uper level of RF modulation (Radio stations) it sends out a signal in a very high gigaherz signal almost impossible to tap into or recive interference on
think of it as a walkie talkie on steroids

Just for information:
The name Bluetooth refers to the Danish king Harald Blåtand (Bluetooth) who unified Denmark and Norway in the 10th Century.
In the beginning of the Bluetooth wireless technology era, Bluetooth was aimed at unifying the telecom and computing industries

bluetooth is a standard for wireless communications between specially equipped devices. This allows for hihg-speed data transfers, as well as high quality audio transmissions over the air between 2 or more devices within range of eachother. In layman's terms, bluetooth allows you to use wireless headsets with your cellular telephone, as well as give you the ability to send data( e.g. photos, music, video, even phone numbers) between two phones or between your phone and pc.

blue-tooth uses RF to allow wireless communication from phone to headset, pda to computer; etc it is all about being wireless....it is still new and fairly flawed like you have to have the phone within 2 feet of you for it to work properly
