Hello and what a great question..when Chrysler took over Plymouth, Dodge, DeSoto and Imperial, they were contracted with Motor Parts Company to make most of there mechanical parts. As with Delco is to GM Mopar Part is to Chrysler. Mopar became a way to say all of the products that were under Chrysler Corp. and everyone new what you meant.

All Daimler-Chrysler products (Chrysler, Dodge, and [lately] Plymouth) are referred to as Mopar products. Though Mopar is a term usually heard in reference to Chrysler's famous high-performance cars.
...With the exception of any of Chrysler's close associates (Mercedes Benz and Daimler), of course.
