I am sick and tired of people dissing people who smoke marijuana for this or that reason. Why has the FDA approved a pill of synthetic THC (the main active ingredient in marijuana) called Marinol, if it had any serious risks involved. Marijuana does not kill brain cells, the only drugs that permanently affect your system are alcohol (legal), and inhalants (legal, although not for huffing, and can be purchased almost anywhere). Marijuana does affect your memory, sense of time, problem solving skills, sense of hunger, etc. for the limited amount of time that you are "high". And smoking any substance, regardless of what it is called, is bad for your lungs, mouth, gums, etc.. It could also definately be taxed, if it was sold in definate amounts by stores who had to purchase liscences to sell it in the specific quantities, and would add a price or weight specific tax.(Much like the current alcohol and tobacco taxes). So if marijuana can't be taxed, and is soo bad for you, why can we tax....

alcohol and tobacco, and why aren't they illegal if they are just as bad for your health (the case of tobacco smoke used at the same frequency), or even worse(alcohol used even moderately). When marijuana is used responsibly (not often, in a private environment, with no intentions on being in public while high) I think it is a great way to relax, a great sleep aide, and an awesome tool for spiritual meditation or prayer, and creative thinking (in an artistic situation). What do you think?

Arguing that it is bad because it is illegal is a horrible arguement, and if you take a look at how society runs in other countries that either have legalized or decriminalized marijuana, the people are much happier. Crime rates are much lower. The penitentiaries are filled with violent offenders, not hippies. (Canada, The Netherlands, France, Italy, Germany, Norway, Sweden)

OH PUH-LEASE! I have never done cocaine or herion either and I can talk negatively about that. How about the fact that it alters your mind function. How about the fact it stinks? How about the fact it is ILLEGAL?

I can talk bad all I want without having to use it, that's a poor argument.

Well, the simple answer is that most people view marijuana as a gateway drug. I don't have the statistics to validate the accuracy of this allegation, but it is the dominant view. I think most people would agree that marijuana is less harmful to your health than alcohol, tobacco, and even coffee. At least the medical science supports this view.

If marijuana is indeed a gateway drug that leads to the use of more harmful drugs like cocaine and heroine, then I can understand why many would be so vehemently against the drug. But even if this is the case, does it make sense to outlaw marijuana because it can LEAD to more harmful activity when currently legal drugs like alcohol and tobacco not only lead to harmful activity but are directly harmful themselves?

I may not have a strong position either for or against the legalization of marijuana, but I do care about consistency and congruity in the law.

EDIT: I saw an answer above and wanted to respond. Alcohol is NOT good for you in small amounts. Recently, the study that made this health claim was re-examined. In the study, the health of those who did drink moderately were compared to the health of those who did not drink at all. The result was that the moderate drinkers had better health. This study was faulty because of those non-drinkers, many were abstaining based on medical reasons. When the non-drinkers who were abstaining for poor health reasons were removed from the non-drinker group, that study showed no difference between the moderate drinkers and non-drinkers. Sorry for the tangent.. just wanted to clear up yet another misconception.

The Bible states " all that man will need I have furnished for him upon this Earth ". Weed is just that, a weed, a natural growing plant. Alcohol and most all drugs have to be produced or altered by man and then they say they are legal.

I go by the Book over what man says....I think the Book has more say so in the matter.

Next.....I do believe this was my exact same speech 17 yrs ago when I was 20. I see things have not changed any.

But I spoke too soon....they have. Just read the other day...." while all main stream drugs have gone down in usage over the years, pot has increased a steady 4% every year "

FIRE ONE UP FOLKS!

If you think weed is bad, gonna kill ya, make you crazy, lose your memory, blah blah blah...then you have fallen victim to believing what is pumped into you by society. If this is you....get back in line...robots don't get to speak.

It has become sad that man has become so greedy for money that he has made a simple herb illegal just so he can create pill after pill after pill to sell to us at a high price so he can enjoy his Benz and his $2 million home.

Drug dealers w/ chains and a pimp ride? Nah....not anymore....now they are Doctors, Drug makers, Pharmacists, etc. I personally have smoked at least 1 joint a day for the past 19 years. Guess what.....I have an IQ of 146 (Einstein was only a 142) and my last physical with the Dr showed me as healthy as a 22 yr old. I have had my own business for 10+ yrs and unless you personally know me, and I mean very closely....you'd never know nor guess I even touch the stuff.

Too many stereo type today or just finger point and repeat what they have heard over taking the time to actually learn something. But it is funny that they will scream and hollar when someone won't listen to their point of view.

Too many closed minds in todays world.

I totally agree with you 100%. You never hear of anyone dying from a pot overdose. Yet alcohol is legal to people over 21 and there are plenty of cases of alcohol poisoning and overdose. Until more research is done on the long and short term affects of marijuana, I say legal it, then tax it. The country will be out of debt in about 2 weeks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

People are taught when they're young that weed is bad. I remember the whole anti-drug thing from grade school. I'm not sure why the government generally doesn't like it. It seems arbitrary, but ah well. Part of the thrill is the illegal aspect/

I would have to agree with you but i have not smoked pot myself. nor do i intend to mainly for the fact i am not interested in having my lungs filled with smoke nor my mind altered by a chemical reaction in my mind. Most other countries don't have a problem with it and it is more safe than alcohol in many situations. I would have to say, like the past with alcohol...give it time and the bureaucrats will come around

I totally agree with everything you've written.

I think the reason that people who've never even tried it speak negatively of it, because of public service announcements on TV, the DARE program in schools, and just fear of the unknown - oh, I forgot to mention simply because it's illegal it HAS to be bad. People need to read between the lines.
