Use moisturizing body wash. I live in a very dry climate and have found that the shower is where a lot of the drying out occurs. After bathing use a really good moisturizer while your skin is still moist and the pours will soak in the moisturizer best. Also drink enough throughout the day and don't spend too much time in the sun. After a couple of days with the body wash your skin should be much better.

Your problem seems to be a little more severe than typical dry skin. You shouldn't have to live with cracks due to dry skin -- those can be painful. Visit a dermatologist and see what treatment options are available. They're more affordable than you might think. If you're worried about seeing a dermatologist for whatever reason, bring up your skin concerns during a routine physical. In the meantime, exfoliate and moisturize. I really like the apricot scrub by St. Ives.

I love just plain old fashioned coconut oil. You can buy it at the grocery store where your basic cooking oils are. It melts wonderfully with your body's temperature and moisturizes great. I use it getting out of the shower while my skin is still wet. Also, I would recommend cool showers, not too warm or hot, nor baths. All of these dry your skin out more by drawing out it's natural oils.
Good luck and I hope you get some relief!

try using an oatmel with honey soap. while scrubbing the soap to your skin, the oatmel will scrape the deadskin (dryskin) and the honey content will help moisturize your skin. after bath, do not towel dry just remove (thru patting) the excess water from your body and then apply a body oil. after 5 minutes (enough for your skin to absorb d oil) seal it with a vitamin E reach lotion.
