It would depend on the size of the company and what type of budget you had to spend. If there was enough to send him/her for a weekend getaway all expense paid that would be nice. Or a nice going away party and a gift like a clock or a nice camera. 32 years is a long itme to stay with one company nowadays. They were a very loyal and dependable employee. Those types of people are few and far between nowadays.

The best way to give farewell to a 55 year old top manager who has devoted his 32 years with one employer is to give him enough retirement package in order for him to cater for his old life since he is coming to an old age.Secondly thismeans that to stay with one employer he was offering a good service so should be give a benefit for his good job.

ask many of the long term employees as well as some of his staff to say a few kind words about how he has impacted them at his going away party--- party held away from the office preferably his fav restaurant- would also be good if you ask him to be "on call" for questions and perhaps to train new recruits on part time basis as many people who retire feel useless

if your company has money get him/her a trip somewhere, if the company can't afford it buy a nice watch or something like that.
