A dermatologist may help, but I think a plastic surgeon would be a better option for scars that old.

I was in a very bad car accident about 6 months ago, and have a horrible scar on my hand. The plastic surgeon is going to do steroid injections into the scar tissue to help it break down.

other than going to the dermatologist (which is the best plan of action), i can only think of a couple of other things.

microderabrasion: it's generally for faces, but why not try it on your legs and hands. save this course of action for if all else fails and you simply CANNOT live with your scars because it's pretty unorthadox.

cocoa butter: tried and true. it'll help fade and smooth. scars might not completely disappear, but they'll be less noticeable. downside, it's slow

ambi cream: this is something that is generally found in stores that sell african american hair care products. it comes in different strengths. it works really well. i'd probably try ambi if i were you

Sorry, lovey, but scars are called scars for a reason: they last a lifetime.

All those creams on the market are just gimmicks, they don't work, but cost a fortune.

You really need to just accept your scars.

Or maybe try to cover them with make-up. There is a make-up called Dermablend which is great at hiding birthmarks. Unless the scars are thick, this make-up may conceal them a bit.

But you need to realize that YOU are not your scars. YOU are beautiful. Love yourself as you are. You are worth it! : )

A dermotologist or costmetic surgeon is the "gold standard" for dealing with these problems.

Creams MIGHT help hide TINY scars.

Vitamin E caplets...you have to open them and put the serum on the scar and rub it on or you can try a home microdermabrasion kit.
