Even though we were knocked out, we have played well. We have been riding our luck a little bit since the Uruguay tie, and now we have lost... it happens!

The referee didn't do too badly, even though he made a clear mistake with the sending off of Materazzi and definately the penalty.

Am I right, or should we continue with our anger?

We'll get over it mate. I am proud of the team and they deserved to get through however they didn't.
Italy know they didnt win but wait till next time.
Australia is on the map now.

I dont think the call was fair. Totti triped ON Lucas Neill, Neill didnt trip him. What is the point of soccer if it's based on the ref's calls? I guess the team who wins will be the team that gets lucky with the referee's calls.

Nonetheless, no beef. I'm proud of the socceroos, they did a fine job. No anger either, we'll come back hard and fast in the next tournament.

I think australia played well in this world cup. Surely exceeded everyone's expectations. The Socceroos proved that Australia too, can play soccer.

I suppose that you are right. I just feel like I have been robbed by that ref and those Italians. If they had won fairly I would have thought good work mate, but they didn't. They had to cheat. They always have to cheat. Even in this game, their best game as far as diving goes, they still cheated. I am not exactly angry, but Really really really dissappointedd. I think that the Aussies could have gone really far. Maybe even to the semi-finals. But they had to be nocked out by some lame call. The ref basically stole the game from them and that is why i am so disappointed.

Last night I was livid as most people who have read my posts will testify. But now I realise how well our boys did against the odds. I am so proud. They made the big steps that were needed for Australian football to kick on. We should not be bitter. It was a great ride. We look forward to the Asian Cup in 2007 and the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. I'm going to enjoy watching the rest of the world cup now. Plenty of great football left. Hopefully it won't be tainted by bad reffing.

Kizz . ---> I think you are mostly right, because if you understand soccer, you have to admit that Italy had more chances than Australia to score.
Australia played a good game, but Hiddink insisted on playing with 5 too slow midfielders (vs 3 mid Italians) even when they had an extra man, keeping Viduka on the field (controlled perfectly by Cannavaro) and not being dangerous at any time.
That is something worth to be discussed, not the penalty kick that was legitimate (if you understand soccer, you will understand that obstruction in the penalty area is awarded with penalty kick... then it doesn't matter if it happened in overtime)

It's obviously frustrating that we lost after playing so well and now we have to wait another 4 years. We did well to even get to the second round and a loss was going to happen eventually, it's just annoying that it happened in a game that we were dominating and some bad refing.

yeah you can, in a sense, blame the aussies for not driving that advantage home but you still have to admit it was a pathetic ref decision. and to add to that Very bad timing. it was like a penalty shootout where the socceroos were not given a chance to have a go.
