God question. I have always thought it to be 33 B.C. He lived 33 years so 1 A.D. would be one year after his death.

I guess it's not as important to know exactly when he was born, but that he was born and sent to save u from sin, and he did all that.

It's a rather complex historical question revolving around the issue of which "Herod" the Bible refers to. The Romans kept excellent histories and if there hadn't been two provincial rules of Judea named Herod, the dating would be easy. My understanding is that most scholars believe that 3 B.C. is most likely, however, it could have been 5 A.D. if it was the other Herod.

FYI, no matter what year it was, Jesus had to have been born in the spring because that is the only time the shepards would have been watching their flocks by night. Christmas was never intended to be the actual day that Jesus was born, rather Christmas "Christ Mass" is simply the Feast Day of the Nativity. It is one of many feast days in the church calendar.

I heard too that the calendar was miscalculated and that the comet was visible before a few years than 1 AD. But it doesn’t really matter, does it? We set up an exact point... it doesn’t change anything if it’s not excatly the same as when Jesus was born.

Because of a mention of a Herod, who was in power at the time of his birth, the exact dates of Jesus' birth, which were not as important as who he had become when he was killed, were probably between 6-4 BCE...

This is due to calendar changes, and other calendar inaccuracies & adjustments made over the past 2,000 years...

You know, I hadn't thought of this in years! I had once read, that based on the dead sea scrolls, that He actually might have been born 8 A.D.! Pretty sure it was from a guy who used to have a column called "The Straight Dope."

I heard from my religion teacher at school that he was born Dec 25th, 4 BCE. Of course then December wouldn't have been known as December, as well as the numbers '25' and '4'.

I heard about 6 BC because some monk miscaclulated in the calendars, meaning he would have actually died around 27 AD.
