Try to avoid scratching them for starters. Also, I find that if I run out of itch creams, I can get some relief by holding an ice cube to the bites to numb the area. I have also been told that rubbing alcohol gives a cooling sensation, but may also sting.
In general, most of the over the counter topical creams for bug bites are completely safe. So, if you are in a lot of discomfort, I say try some cortisone cream.
Good luck!

ice cubes. the cold will numb the sensation to itch. by the way lemon grass is a natural mosquito repellant. and to add to the tree hugger vibe...if you line a dog's dog house with fresh eucalyptus leaves and branches the dog will not get or have fleas.

if you don't have clean mud/clay, use a clay face mask, let it dry on the bites to draw out the poison
