Well not exactly correct. Default gender is female - without testosterone we all would develop as females. We are essentially genderless early in our development until one is selected - default or otherwise via testosterone production. Testosterone is produced from DNA programming occurring at the time of fertilization.
Our sexual organs are analogous - clitoris to penis, ovaries to testicles, labia to scrotum that early in developmental stages have to capacity to be either under the right circumstances. Once a gender is selected there are some basic differences between genders including things like brain development...so the genders are fundamentally different.

Not exactly, but close.
Each sperm carries the chromosone that determines gender so every fertilized egg is, on a DNA level, either male or female (or neither, due to damage, but that's a whole different topic). So on that level, male zygotes are always male and female zygotes are always female.
However, the DNA pattern for males doesn't physically activate until about 7 weeks after conception, when the males begin to enjoy the effects of testosterone and the females don't. So, in that way, yes, we all start out the same (without testosterone) and the males "become male" later on in the pregnancy.

In simple terms...
The mother's egg carries X genetic structure which represent one-half of a female. However the males sperm holds X or Y structure which represents one-half of a female or a male respectively. When the egg is fertilized by the male sperm the genetic structure of the child, in embryo form, becomes female (XX) or male (XY). The male's sperm decides the sex of the child.
Therefore you question is half right -- yes the unfertilized egg within your mother's womb is originally female (more exactly it is one-half of a female).

think of it this way. we do not start out as female that would be absurd. each human both male and female shares certain characteristics in common. this is known as a template. from this basic form both sexes develop. to say that something is male that develops from female is just bad science. we do not start out with ovaries that change to testicles or a vagina that turn to a penis. this is a fallacy. we start out as a basic form that differentiates later into individual sexes depending on the chromosomes.

as far as i can remember from OB nursing school, the male carries the XY chromosome and the female carries the XX chromosome. the sexual characteristics are formed on the union of the sperm & egg cell (fertilization).
