I am alarmed at the vicious personal attacks that come upon people who try to "leave the herd" and question why we are all stampeding in a particular direction, and voice an opinion that goes against the crowd.

I thought it was "American" to honor free speech and debate. I think we should relish the freedom we have, to hear another persons side, and then counter their arguments with thoughts of your own. There is much to be gained when people are sharing, talking, and hearing each other.

It seems anymore if anyone says anything at all against what our leaders choose to do at any given moment all the sudden they are called liberal scum, communists, unpatriotic traitors and publicly flogged or something. It feels very unamerican. What is wrong with occasionally questioning things, and asking for reasons, validation, or re-examining things more closely? It seems healthy to me.

There are some things that just BOTHER me. like...
When a certain music band, that was fairly popular on the country scene, suddenly voiced and anti-war opinion ...

suddenly they are banned from all local radio stations and everyone hates them now.

Peoples careers are ruined. Celebrities become nobodies. All for saying an opinion.

Hey, I'm not saying to be anti-war. Maybe the war had some good reasons it needed to be fought. Maybe you have some good points to make too. But why ruin someones life, and forbid your children to ever hear their music again, just because they share a different opinion or something?

People are shunned, ruined, publicly flogged and verbally skinned, if they leave the "herd" and make an attempt to think for themselves.

Even if you disagree with someone, I think sometimes listening to what they have to say and just saying 'that's what you think. you have the right to your opinion and I have a right to form my own. this is why I disagree..." and suddenly you get to make all your excellent points and validate what you believe. what is the harm in that?

i think its healthy to debate, to talk, and be civil and listen. Free speech is priceless. Isnt that the very kind of freedoms we are supposed to be fighting to give Iraq? Why take it away from ourselves?

I am disturbed by the other freedoms we seem to be voluntarily giving up as well. What's the deal with that?

Being American is believing everyone is equal and that they have the right to pursue their own dreams and happiness. Liberals are the most unamerican element in America today for they think degrading American culture is right. I mean look what people are doing to the Cowboy image. There are still those who are truely American, but there are also alot of trash who would trade in those Values for greed, and trying to change the real Americans Values. Don't let people in the high corporations and the corrupt politicians Symbolize what America is.

Well you have about 30 million immigrants from Mexico and central \ south America (40% of which are illegal) in the country. That is 10% of the population; and they will change many things in our country no doubt. But I have the suspicion that is not what you ment by un American.

Most American's are smarter than their media. However, the American media is racist, and reports on news like they are talking to 3 year olds. Hence, American's only get a very filtered view of the world and their society, and it's very America first. Most American's don't have a clue about what is really going on in the rest of the world and I blame their media.

I liken the American media to the old Soviet Union propaganda state television.

Being Canadian, we have a unique view of our neighbours to the south, and what I see is the Old Soviet Union. America is now expansionist (occupying Iraq, installing democracy...in other words, making sure that American companies profit more in Iraq). The are imposing their will more and more like the old Soviet Union, listening to their world partners less, and they have a propaganda machine that makes the old Soviet Union's and the Nazi's look like amateur night.

Yep, we have just another aggressive nation like the Old Soviet Union to the south of us, and I pray to God, someone doesn't slap them down like they did to the old Soviet Union.

YES!!! America is DEFINITELY becomming very unAmerican... we are on our way to becomming politically Marxist... if you don't know what that is it has a lot to do with communism, but it's a good bit different than Russian communism... (the USSR was economically Marxist...) all of our rights are being taken away and we are forced to become politically correct, such a joke...

Read this please, I don't have the space to explain what I'm talking about here...

" You make the shrewd observation of how political correctness engenders evil because of “the violence that it does to people’s souls by forcing them to say or imply what they do not believe, but must not question.” Can you talk about this a bit? "

What do you mean by un-American? If you are talking about civil liberties, then yes it is. If you talking about the free exchange of ideas between us, then no. I will say we are a country with two minds. I hope we can get to a point of concession instead of all the divisions we have today.

Yes, but only because true patriotism is being replaced by a "patriotism" that means blindly supporting the leaders. We are forgetting what the great men who founded this nation held so dear. We are straying from the path of Liberty and Justice not just for the chosen, but for all.

I don't think so. Although, I would agree to make everyone in this country speak english and stop with the second language usages within the country. No matter what nationality you are once your living in America you should asimilate with the English language.
