Well, the brown is rust. If the color is getting lighter and lighter brown, it's probably in the pipes in your house and will work itself out. If it gets darker, though, it's probalby from the city utilities. Are you in the city? Do you get modern day plumbing from the water company or are you hooked up to a well? If you are with the water co, call them and see what's up. If you're hooked up to a well, call a well service guy and they'll figure out a solution. If it's a well, by the way, it probably isn't rust, but dirt or mud. Also, either way, if you wanted to buy a filtration system(I recommend reverse osmosis) that would solve the problem, and be healthier for you and your family in general.
Actually, now that I think about it, maybe your house is haunted... I saw a movie once.... no, never mind, that's not very likely.

This depends, do you have a Water Well or do you have City Water- often the City flushes water mains and causes this problem for a day or so- Call the City water dept if that is the case- they will tell you what to do.
If you have a Water Well, you maybe be going dry and picking up sand from the well.
When this is solved, be sure to drain some of the water from the Water heater, spiget, on the bottom, do that once a year anyway. get rid of sediment.

Report this to your local water company. They might have an explanation for you. If you have old galvanized pipes, it could be rust. In which case, they need to be replaced from the main line at the street and all the pipes in your house. Very expensive.

The pipes are corroded. You'll have to have them flushed in the street. Call the water company and tell them your clothes are getting stained from the rust in the pipes.

Do you have a well and a water softener? If so you are low on salt. If you have no well you have a problem as I hope for your sake that the brown is just the typical rust or iron deposits,

sounds like you have a problem with heavy metals. they have a filtration system for your entire house. this would be a good idea, they also make filters that go into a whole house system for chemicals and heavy metals and others
