Depends on what you mean by "best." You really can't go wrong with pretty much anywhere in the American West, but Yosemite is my all-time favorite.

There are many, too numerous to mention, some of my favorites are already mentioned. A few would be Glacier basin campground in Rocky Mountain National Park, CO, Mesa Verde National Monument, CO, Newberry Crater National Monument in OR., Apgar Campground in Glacier National Park, and while there take a hike to Trout Lake. There is some great primitive campsites along the Salmon river and its tributaries in Idaho, most on Forest Service Land. In the Mountains north of Ely, NV there are some beautiful primitive places too.

Copper Harbor, Michigan. Right on Lake Superior. We stayed at the Fort Wilkins State Park. Lot's to see and do, or just relax and have a great time. We went there about 4 years ago, and want to go back. You can see Fort Wilkins, go fishing on Lake Fanny hooe, hike the many trails, take the water fall tour, or light house tour. Visit some copper mines, or drive up Brockway Mountain and see tremendous views like Isle Royale, and all the towns below it. Check out this link, it will give you a lot more info and you can check out some of the pictures of the area.

Good luck on whatever you decide to do. Be safe, and have a blast!!!

Any National Park, National Forest, or State Forest in NE Washington, N IDaho, or NW Montana.
I would suggest these:
Washington:
Around the Usk area, such as Lake Sullivan and North and South Lake Skookum; Riverside State Park near Spokane, WA; Jump Off Joe Lake near Deer Park, WA; The Camp grounds near the Two Rivers area north of Davenport, WA
Idaho:
On Lake Couer d'Alene- Bells Bay and Squaw Bay, also anywhere in the St Joe National Forest south of Lake Couer d'Alene; Lake Cocolallas (south of Sandpoint, Idaho); Farragut State Park (on lake Pend O'reille) near Athol, ID; the national forest around Clark Fork, ID
Montana:
In and near Glacier National Park- Apgar, Fish Creek, Avalanche Creek, Loggin lake, Kintla Lake, Quartz Lake, Izaac Walton area, and Polebridge.
Flathead National Forest, anywhere in the North Fork area (just to the west of Glacier Park) from Polebridge to Columbia Falls; The Hungry Horse Dam and Resevoir Natural Area; The Great Bear Wilderness, the Bob Marshall Wilderness, and the Swan Range;
The Tobacco Valley area of NW Montana (near Eureka, MT); The Yaak River Valley and Bull River areas of NW Montana (between Libby/Troy MT and Bonners Ferry and Clark Fork, ID); The National Forests South and West of St Regis/Haugen, MT. I have camped in all these areas, they are all very beautiful and somewhat isolated.
