Can anyone explain to me why the two brothers on prisonbreak have different last names??

Okay, I found the answer ... so this is edited.
When Michael & Lincoln's mother got pregnant with Michael, their father left them. Lincoln has his dad's last name, and Michael has his mom's last name.

Michael & Lincoln have different last names because their birth dad left their mom while pregnant with Michael therefore he (Michael) "adopted" his mother's maiden name.
Also, it's because to avoid any connection with his brother, Lincoln as to not lead the authorities in knowing the 2 are related... after all, Michael's sole reason in being incarcerated himself is to get Lincoln out!

maybe the mother wasn't married with the older brother and was or the father just wanted to let the second child carry on his name

Michel's brother changed his last name after their dad left them, when they where younger.
