OK, here we go....

In studying the fossil record, scientists have found fairly detailed evidence showing that organisms with rudimentary feathers showed up millions of years ago. (Archeopteryx) However, trace fossils (not of an organism itself, but of other evidence of an organism's presence) of egg shells have been found that predate Archeopteryx by many more millions of years. These egg shells show the same layering and development as the modern cleidoic egg. The cleidoic egg is they type of egg used by all birds, including the chicken. Therefore, the egg came before the chicken.

In terms of evolutionary theory, this would also be the case, as some chicken ancestor would have laid an egg with a mutated embryo that developed into a chicken. That chicken type bird would breed and lay eggs that were even more like modern chickens until we have our current breed. In each step of the process, the egg would come first.

The question "Which came first, the chicken or the egg?" is based upon short term observation of a natural process on farms everywhere. Using only the evidence of our lifetimes, it is impossible to answer. If you accept evolutionary theory, without even getting into the controversy around HUMAN evolution, it is easy to see that the egg lead to the chicken.

POSTSCRIPT: After reviewing other answers I wanted to add something. There is nothing in the Bible that contradicts or refutes this at all! While it is true that the BIble makes no mention of eggs ever being created, it also makes no reference to bacteria, fungi, or even Yahoo for that matter. The office of the Pope, both in John Paul II and Benedict XVI, has stated that evolutionary theory does NOT go against the teachings of the Catholic church. While some other faiths debate or question human evolutionary theory, I do not know of any that have had rallies or protests to say eggs were spawn of the devil, or that wolves and dogs are NOT related. For your question, religion is not necessarily involved.

There's 2 answers to this depending on what you believe in.

If you believe in Science, it's the egg. Something has to evolve into the chicken. The only way a chicken come into existence is that evolution takes place and somehow created an egg which then hatched into a chicken. An animal cannot evolve into a different type of animal. Once a Frog, Dog, or Chicken, etc. is born, their DNA is set, and will not evolve into something else.

If you believe in the Bible, it's the chicken. God puts animals in this world, not eggs.

The chicken. First there was non-chicken things. But then they evolved into chicken and started laying CHICKEN-eggs. But if you are talkin about eggs in general, the eggs came first. And dat's a stupid question, if I may add.

we may never know....because if the egg came first, then how did it get here...and if the chicken came first, we would need an egg for the chicken to be born, but where did the egg come from, how did it get here??

The chicken came first. The egg would not have been able to hatch unless a chicken was sitting on it.

Eggs because organisms laid eggs before chickens came to be.

it would be the egg, but the chicken stepped on it. but seriously, i think the chicken cause the bible says that animals were created, with no mentioning of eggs

THE CHICKEN BECAUSE WITHOUT A CHICKEN TO SIT ON THE EGG IT WOULD NEVER HAVE HATCHED. WITHOUT A ROOSTER AND A HEN FIRST THERE COULDNT BE AN EGG EITHER. GOD MADE THE ANIMALS FIRST JUST LIKE MAN, HE DIDNT MAKE ADAM AND EVE AS BABIES, BUT ADULTS

there are two ways to this.
according to darwins theory of evolution, the egg should have come first.
but according to the bible, god created all animals so, the chicken came first.
Its up to you. if you're a catholic, the answer is chicken
if you'e anything else, the answer is egg.
