Just like anything, you have to bust your butt to make a good living as a musician. If you can land some house gigs and supplement them with occasional clubbing, you have a start. Teaching lessons is a good way to make some cashish, plus you have your instrument in your hand. If you are on the road, it is harder to get lessons, but you'd be suprised how easy it can be to pick up one-time lessons from people after the gig. Just have some good sheets to teach from and give to your students, and you can easily give a half hour or hour lesson for 20-30 bucks. If your band can swing the investment and you are confident that you'll hang together for a while, merch is the way to go. The profit margin on t-shirts is great, even lighters and stuff sell pretty good if you have a good bandname, cool, simple logo and creative design. Selling demos or albums isn't going to make that much money, but it gets your name out which is obviously the whole point. Otherwise, learn to eat well cheap, and keep your gear in good working order, 'cause the fact is that music is a rough business. If you stick with it, though, you'll develop a network of friends who know where the gigs are and who will point the available drummer or open house gig your way.

CD's CD's CD's... it may seem like a big expense at first but if you dig real hard I am sure you can find a friend of a friend of a friend who has their own sweet recording studio in the basement or some jazz like that. Always sell CD's at your shows. Not only will you get a lot more of those spare bills floating around in people's pockets but if you keep the CD prices to $10 or under (pretty common for bands doing it on their own from what I have found) you might sell some other merch.
I live in Virginia and I can't remember a time in my life where I didn't see about a billion high school and college kids with Dave Matthews bumperstickers and other Merch.
The other reason to have CD's out there is this, you never know where a CD is gonna end up. People share the music they like with the people they know if they can. Let them.
Rock ON!

a good way to make money is to sell your instruments and get out of the band!!! i am really sorry if i ruin your dreams, this is only my opinion, but the chances of making it big time are so small that i think it isnt even worth trying!! i am sure that being in a band also is just a phase and ten years from now you will wonder why you even did it.
... or on the other hand, you have a lot of talent and you are liked by people, then you could try doing bigger gigs, like casinos and fairs and stuff.
well, anyways, i wish the best of luck to you and i hope everything works out the way you want it to!!

Merchandise is definitely the way to go. As the price for a gig is broken down to also pay managers / agents.
If you are pretty well known, you can offer meet 'n greet passes (where you hang out with a select few for a short bit before or after the gig) for an additional cost.

Hate to say it but until you take off you have to get a real job during the day and gig's at night until just being in your band pays what you are looking for!

The real music is not about the money it is about music that is in your soul that must be expressed. But if you have to be in for money, go for the merch.
