I'm suspect of anybody who says "because they are cowards" - no compassion whatsoever.
People commit suicide because, at the moment, they see no other alternative. The emotional pain is unbearable, and they dont think it will go away; however, their judgement is clouded by their mood state - and given time/therapy, they CAN feel differently.
Depression (and I mean CLINICAL depression, which is qualitatively different from just feeling blue) can deplete the serotonin in your nervous system, causing you to feel hopeless. After a few weeks on the right antidepressant, suicidality improves for most.

Firstly, there are the people with psychological problems like a psychosis, schizophrenia or a manic-depression. 40% of all people who commit suicide have been admitted to a psychiatric hospital and therefore belong to this group.
An other group consists out of people who commit suicide after a big shock in their life. This can be a serious disease or the loss of a beloved person.
Then there is also a group that dreams of the death as a liberation of life. They make sure that they can not be found during their attempt and that nothing can go wrong.
It is very difficult to answer this question, as we’re talking about the human being, and not about the result of a harvest or the prediction of an eclipse of the moon.
A few factors which can contribute to this climax are for example social factors. Often these people are very shy and are afraid to be criticized. They feel that they don’t belong to the society. Also sexual problems can lead to suicide. You can think of, for example, homosexuals. Then of course also personal factors play an important role. People who think in black- and white terms are often more tempted to commit suicide.

Usually depression. The bad part about depression is that it messes up your thinking patterns and even how you physically feel. Every situation, especially the one that's stressing you, looks hopeless. You can't "see the light at the end of the tunnel." You feel like you want to "crawl into a hole" and bury yourself, shutting everybody out. A lot of people don't know that victims of suicide suffered from depression because when it hits, they tend to isolate themselves. You began to feel worthless, either because of the way the disease makes you feel, or because you can't seem to "snap out of it" which is a common "pop psychology" phrase. If the person wasn't depressed, their thinking would let them know the idiot saying that needs a good thwoking to the head, however, they see it as their failure. And sometimes, the pain is just so bad, both physical and emotional, that they just can't take any more of it and choose to take their lives in an effort to be relieved of it. Anyone who hasn't been depressed can't really understand what it's like when you hit that point where death seems to only option. The bad thing about it is usually, the depressed person is wrong, but their skewed view of things won't let them see a way out or it's just not possible for them to grasp it.
Depression comes in many forms and the causes can be varied. Situational depression is a normal part of life-- it's cause is from anything to financial loss, the loss of a loved one, or a major life change that is overly stressful; the worst part starts becoming better after around two weeks, depending on circumstances. Chemical depression, such as Bi-Polar disorder, etc. is from chemical imbalances and primarily from genetics, head injuries, or lengthened situational depression. Clinical depression sometimes includes Chemical depression, but normally it's the culmunation of situational depression that a person doesn't get through as they normally should; the reasons for someone not being able to work through their depression can vary, but after a long period of time, things just don't go back to normal like they should and the person then needs treatment. A period of a month or more is generally when one is considered to have become clinically depressed.

maybe because life is so hard Lil example here " Imagine your 22 years old and your marriage seems to be falling apart then your best friend of 23 yrs of age dies then a couple weeks later your baby girl (daughter) dies then u almost die have to go to the hospital get fixed just in time to keep living note that u didn't almost die of self inflicted reasons but the day you go in for surgery 10 minutes before you go in ur told ur grandmother has cancer then you get to go home after all that the night you get home from the hospital u have to go back because ur mom has had a heart attack" then well I wont go on but when things like this happen and believe me it's a true story and I left out lots of details but you know it's hard to cope with things when you feel alone but maybe if u new people's story's u wouldn't judge or ask why would a person do such a thing " it's a way out" the person in this story has tried to commit suicide several times but guess what God wants her here and so does her son that's why she's still here

The survival instinct is a very, very strong thing- unless there is something chemically wrong with the brain, it isn't "normal" to want to die. Stress can lead to suicide, yes, but only in a person who has pre-existing mental imbalances. A normal person under stress just isn't going to decide to kill themselves.

Kids who have been raped, molested, beaten and other horrible things. The lost of a loved one, stress of no work, or working to much, being poor, being picked on and teased. Some people can just not take these things so they end their pain.

Many people who commit suicide feel that there is no way out of their current living situation. I've learned in one of my courses that even young children are able to commit suicide when they are living in homes that beat them severely.

My view on it would be that in their eyes their life is not worth living. That they bring more people down and it would be better with out them being here. It could be a guilt factor also.
There is probably a lot more info out there tho.

See "Mr Answer", who is on the ball with this answer. It is the ultimate act of selfishness, but do not judge for this they are very sick to have done away with themselves. I hope this has not happened to someone close to you, it often torments the survivors.
