becasue she wants a killer ending. duh. look have you ever read a book or series where the story was so good and then the ending just killed it because it was sappy and predictable and so didn't measure up with the rest of the book?? THAT sucks. Generally when i read books like that, it means the author isn't very good.
So J.K. Rowling is making sure that to keep Harry Potter a classic and must read forever...she's sticking to a killer surprise ending that will be as good as the rest of the series. I think she would alienate and dissappoint her readers more by selling out and giving us what we want. It's HER story in the end.
And she's done a pretty good job so far, so i think we should let her continue writing Harry Potter whatever way she wants.

As she stated herself, the Harry Potter series is a fight against a great evil, there are going to be great sacrifices involved in stopping that evil. It is her creative epic, and it will not kill the franchise, these books will be timeless classics in the young adult library. She may lose current fans, but she will gain new readers all of the time. Her success will be measured by Harry Potter, and I don't think she wants anyone to take that away from her. She wants the final word in Harry Potter, and if that means Harry dies, then that is what she must do.
Not that she is going to kill Harry, it's just rumors right now.

No, I wasn't upset. I expected it. We've lost a character every book since GOF. I expect that with everything that will be going on in the last book, someone(s) bound to get killed. I don't think she'll ruin her career, or that she'll lose fans. I think if character death was an indication of her success, the fifth and sixth books wouldn't have sold as many books.

Does it really matter who she kills off in the final book? The series is only going to be seven books anyway. But, I do still hate it when she kills off major characters.

It's her final book, who cares who she kills off? She leaves you begging for more. I think that is the idea.
