Comic books often have a vast array of characters in them, both good and evil. Due to the large volume of unique characters this leads to better screenplays due to more content. Remember the X-men trilogy, the biggest compliant was not about the movie plot lines, but rather "My favorite X-man was left out." or " Wolverine would have never acted that way." Video games on the other hand, usually feature the character that is played by the gamer and that character simply faces a horde of enemies and their evil leader, especially in the Nintendo/Super Nintendo era. With the lack of a good back story writers seem to grasp and write ideas that usually were never apart of the video game universe. Thus screenplays seem to focus on bizarre situations that never happened in the video game, such as the Super Mario Bros. movie where Bowser is a blond haired human? Thus the complaint of a video game based movie is usually: Gee, that movie was nothing like the video game.
Video game movies also have a problem with their audience. Do you make the movie for little kids, (who Hollywood prolly feels are playing the majority of kids) or make it for teenagers and young adults (who prolly wouldn't be caught dead in a movie theater by their peers and/or girlfriend). This leads to some confusion on what direction to make the movie.

It's because comic book movies have been around allot longer and have more scenarios and background than most video game movies. Also most video game movies rely to much on special effects and have terrible scripts and plots.
