Tabbed browsing, pop-up suppression, and better support for HTML, Javascript, and CSS standards, for starters. It's also a little faster.

One big difference is the lack of Active X support. While this means you still have to use IE to update Windows, the upside is that it eliminates some of the nastier ways in which a malicious website can manipulate your computer.

These are the major advantages of Firefox over IE.

1. It's free.

2. It's Open Source.

3. It's Secure.

4. You don't need administrator privileges to install it.

5. You can run it from the folder where it's installed. You can install it on a Flash Drive and bring it wherever you go. Just plug it and you're ready to surf.

6. Tabbed browsing allowed. ( Previous versions of IE didn't have it. But in IE 7 Microsoft added it.)

And also it is rated as the Best Product of Year 2005 by PC World.

it isn't a matter of better; just another option browser. There is an organization called Mozilla. Mozilla was the original code name for the product that came to be known as Netscape Navigator, and later, Netscape Communicator. Now "Mozilla" is the principal trademark representing the Foundation and the official releases of internet client software developed through open source projects. Microsoft does share research and development with Mozilla however, has branched off to its own browser project called Mosaic. I do believe however, that the new Internet Explorer 7 uses the foundational base shared within the Mozilla Project.

If you have a chance to download both Firefox and the New internet explorer 7 beta release, you'll discover the overwhelming similarities of both platform applications.

Now, it must be clear that Microsoft did not steal the mozilla project technology. Quite rightly, Microsoft was heavily involved in the creation and project development for one simple reason. It was practical that all browsers be able to show all content, without there being a difference in view between both. from a programmatic standpoint there are differences, however, the main differences are most notable within the display and coding aspects of styles specific to each browser. There are some things which will appear in a certain way in Firefox and another way in IE, as well as the opposite being true.

So ultimately it comes down to personal preference at this point. The internet is moving to a general standard which will affect all internet programming and visual congruency.

My best suggestion would be to download them both and decide which you like better. I personally run them both. For programmatic reasons and surfing reasons. There are some things I prefer to do in Firefox, and other things I tend to do within IE. You'll discover that most all Microsoft websites, and related websites are best viewed within Internet Explorer. Other than that, you'll notice no real change.

I hope I've been able to help :)

Good question!! I highly suggest that you try the Firefox browser. I've been using the Firefox browser for a while now and I wouldn't even dream of ever going back to Internet Explorer.

Firefox is better than Internet Explorer in so many ways. A few of the good things about Firefox are:
(I got these from http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/)

A Better Web Experience
Firefox 1.5 has an intuitive interface and blocks viruses, spyware, and popup ads. It delivers Web pages faster than ever. And it’s easy to install and import your favorites. Packed with useful features like tabbed browsing, Live Bookmarks, and an integrated Search bar, Firefox will change the way you experience the Web, for the better.

Faster Browsing
Enjoy quick page loading as you navigate back and forward in a browsing session. Improvements to the engine that powers Firefox deliver more accurate display of complex Web sites, support for new Web standards, and better overall performance.

Stronger Security
Firefox keeps you more secure when you’re browsing the Web, closing the door on spyware, worms, and viruses. The Firefox community of developers and security experts works around the clock to monitor security issues and release updates to better protect you.

The overall coolest thing.... TABS!!! Instead of having to open multiple windows if you want more than one page open at a time.. you can use tabs. That way you can have as many windows as you want from the same browser session. It is all neatly organized as would from a file cabinet WITH TABS ;) So there is a header on each tab that tells you what site is on which tab. In Internet explorer there were windows everywhere if you wanted multiple pages open at same time. Kind of like a pile of papers on a table. You had to pick one up to see what was behind it. TABS ROCK!.. Very neat and organized. For a complete listing of the pros click on this..

One con though is sometimes it can be a "hog" and slow down the system. Not sure why.

I have Firefox on my Mac here at home and it works far better than IE. I have IE on my Compaq at work and have no problems at work.

Basic theory is that because it is used less there are less programmers who design their popup websites and adware software to capture information.

It's the same for Outlook where most email viruses are designed with Outlook in mind and do not cause problems on other systems

Fewer security holes is the big thing, also it has more features for a more customized way to surf the net, with free downloadable skins, and add-on applications. It is just great. period.
