I have the same problem. It's a result of use and the memory taken up by the programs installed.

It could be one of a number of things. 1) You might have adware, spyware, or malware slowing your system down. Do a scan and remove any malware. 2) You could have lots of programs opening up immediately into your system tray. To change this, click Start, then Run, then type "msconfig." Click on the "Startup" tab, which will bring up the System Configuration Utility. Uncheck any programs that you don't want to automatically start at startup. 3) If you added something like a wireless card or other hardware, the software for it could be adding to your startup time. Nothing you can do about this. 4) You need to defragment. 5) You should probably set your Internet Explorer options so that Temporary Internet Files get dumped when you close Explorer. Go to Tools, then Internet Options, click Advanced, scroll down to Security, and check the box "Empty Temporary Internet Files folder," or something similar.

Try using virus scanning software as well as an adware remover. If XP is still taking a super long time to boot try to remove everything that starts up when windows starts up. Click start, then run type msconfig then click run, find the tab that says startup and unselect the programs you don’t want to start when your computer starts. WARNING!!! The MSCONFIG is a system admin tool and by modifying it you run the risk of messing up your computer.

Perform regular maintenance for one thing, defragment your drive (start->program files->accessories->system tools), clean up unnecessary programs off of your desktop (control panel -> add/remove programs), download a good spyware program, and reduce the amount of programs that 'run at startup' usually you have do this for each program, just go into it and look for an option that says 'run at startup' or something like that.

hello, i am a geek and know a lot about the working and flaws of XP
you can do nothing, im sorry to say...microsoft windows XP is flawed in that it stores useless info on your comp every time you shut down and turn on and eventually your system will get slow......the only thing you can do is reinstall
i recommend:
get a small hard drive for XP and a big one for everything else so you can reinstall XP and everyting else will be there
good luck

I had XP and I always had to clear internet temp files , cookies, history and then run disc clean up. this will help. also run spy wear and anti virus programs. and defrag the system. These thing should put it back to normal.
The amount of Restore space you use can slow it down to, if you use more space than you need, the restore will store more info than you need.

It's probably your harddrive. Look at doing a defrag. Also, look at the following:

1. Install Windows Defender

I agree with G.M. You also need to stop most of the programs from running at startup.

It's probably caused by "clutter". Use your system clean up to speed up tasks. Also, if you've downloaded "auto run" programs (like yahoo) ea one will add a bit of time to start up.
