It can be awkward, yes. But I think it's completely normal... even on a regular day, when you're just thinking about unmet goals and fantasies for your life. A birthday is just another reminder that time is passing, so it's a natural-enough time to take stock.

Maybe your thinking and crying are signs that you are an insightful person with deep feelings, and with dreams and aspirations for your life. Those are traits to embrace and be proud of.

It is better to cry and let those feelings out than to bottle them up. It may be painful for a few minutes -- even hours, perhaps -- but would the pain really be any less if you pretended not to care, and/or refused to cry?

Though I don't know in what context he said it, I agree with Socrates, that "the unexamined life is not worth living."

I hope this helps you feel understood, and normal. Now maybe when you are finished with the tissue box, the best thing you could do for yourself is to write down some goals and dreams, and then begin to make them happen. *You* are probably the single biggest force behind making your life "what you dreamed it would be." The best of luck.

You can make yourself crazy worrying about things like that or you can live your life as it comes, and have fun doing it!! When I was 13 or so I wanted to be either an architect or an archaeologist, well guess what neither of those things happened, but I am a wife and mother! I did have 2 boys so I gt to play in the dirt alot and build sandcastles and little log cabins, amd lots of lego houses, so if you look at things like that I guess I did become what I wanted, just in a different context.
I am 46 and a granny too!

Just remember that song that goes "It's my party and I'll cry if I want to!" It's only natural to feel sad and disappointed if your dreams don't materialise. It might be useful to reflect on the things that you have accomplished already. If anyone feels awkward about you crying, tell them to have a heart!

Life hardly ever works out the way we want it to, but we can do our best to achieve our dreams. Trying our hardest is the ultimate success.

Do you fear you are like Lazy Bob? (Bob-- He was lazy his whole life, lived off of Cheetos, and died of a heart attack at age 40)

You may fear that since you did nothing drastic in your life, people won't remember you when you die. (Like becoming a ultra-famous movie star)

Stop thinking so much.
Just enjoy life, and try to achieve what you want to do. :)
