As the only nation in the world to have used it against another nation, is America paranoid that it might happen here, with all the repercussions that it will entail?

There is no doubt that a nuclear detonation over America would be terrible. But it is just as unlikely as it is horrible.

I fear what is not quite as devastating or brutal, but far more likely to happen. I fear not what an external country or terrorist might do to the US, but what the US is doing to itself.

With every act of legislation, the government gains more power, and the individuals lose some freedom. I fear the totalitarian state that will arise because of peoples' irrational fear of external threats.

Our strength has always been our freedom, and as our freedom diminishes, so too does our strength. When we allow Congress to pass the Patriot Act, for example, we make ourselves weaker by diminishing our Constitution, our rights, and our American way of life.

I grew up in the cold war when every time that TV warning signal came on we jumped to see if we were about to be obliterated. We were very educated on what nuclear war would do. By the way, its not the blast you have to worry about, that will out right kill you. It is the fall out, it can spread radioactive material over thousands of square miles, and those deaths will be slow.

By growing up during those times I do keep an eye out on nations that could target us and I understand why our government would want to curtail any real threat. Our next generation shouldn't have to grow up that way.

As far as fear, I live next to a military base that would be a prime target. I might get to see the flash but that would be about it. I don't lose sleep over things that if they happen I cannot avoid.

Ever Since the Cold War, it was entranced in our head that it would and could happen at any time.

We always worried about the Soviets Launching a missile at us.

Problem with people is that they never seen to read History books nor talk to anyone who lived through things like this.

I guess that is another reason I do not mind Bush doing what he is doing. I lived through years of fear. I do not want to live more years of fear because some psychopathic terrorist has a nuke.

I guess we can see from America's reactions toward smaller Countries, our Government has some concern, along with other Countries. It really not scare me as I figure we will die one day and that life. I not go into the Jesus thing, though I mentioned it. Look at it this way, IF, we just die, we not going to know we ever existed! So, it not a threat how ever one looks at it!

just because your paranoid don't mean they aren't out to get you.
lets face it, we are over due, and a lot of countries would love to cripple us. this religious terrorist crap that's going on now, is bound to figure a way to nuke at least one city, plus we have this stand off with China, does it frighten me...no...nothing I can do when all the people in power seem to be homicidal maniacs.
