Sternotherus odoratus

Midland Painted Turtle
Chrysemys picta marginata

With that description, it can be many turtles (painted, softshell, musk, snapping..). Send me a picture (wu_gwei21@yahoo.com) or go to this gallery and click on the turtle I listed above and look at each picture. The gallery has many pictures of each species.

Does the turtle have a leathery shell? the coloration and the yellow area near the eyes sound like a softshell turtle. A pic would help.

Reddish belly with patterns in other colors?

If so, it is a Painted turtle (Chrysemys picta), a common wild and captive turtle. It does OK in captivity (better if captive bred than wild caught), although young ones can be tricky for new keepers.

If you go to Turtletimes.com and post a picture your turtle can be identified. It sounds like a yellow slider but a picture will confirm it.
