Lol, mowers have higher compression ratios then car engines..... false...... they are usually lower (especially the side valve flat heads) and work good on regular, and last just as long. What you have is trash in the carb, this also should be the side mounted air filter? (quantum?) make sure you get a new gasket to go inbetween the carb and filter housing back, don't leave it too loose or too tight, or tear it because this will cause hard starting later on.
What you need to do is take the carb off (behind the air filter housing) and tear it apart, and spray it out good through every little hole you can find with carb cleaner....... and compressed air if you have it. These mowers are made to run on regular, and have no difference in life with regular over super.
Btw to the last guy, its a BRIGGS..... so its a 4 cycle. And these carbs aren't adjustable.

If its the wrong fuel, it wouldn't start in the first place. Its not getting enough fuel to the carbureator. Remove it and clean the carb. If the problem still persists, its an air issue. The air filter might be dirty or needing replaced. I would actually do the air filter first b/c it is easy to do.

sounds like you may have a vacuum leak, this is due to a leaking o-ring on the intake, and lawn mowers have a higher compression ratio than a car therefore the 92 octane fuel will run better and make the mower last longer, the only fuel that could mess it up is diesel then just drain it and refill with gas.

Is it 2 stroke or 4 stroke engine, they all take gas, but 2 stroke takes a gas and oil mixture, - the only mistake on t he 2 stroke would be pure gas, if so, don't run it , it will burn up- if you put oil and gas in a 4 stroke it won't run very good. and smoke like hell.
Sounds like you need Carb adjustment-

Any kind of gas will work, sound like there's rust or water in your tank. Has your gas contender been sitting awhile?

Throw a match in the tank...if it burns then it would burn in your mower.
