Well, there are a few groups of stakeholders that would appreciate some consideration from the sociological investigator.
1) Subjects would prefer not to be harmed by the research.
2) Society, and especially the Sociological research community would appreciate researchers refrain from injecting bogus research results into their literature so that they are not waisting time perpetuating a lie, when the researcher should have done the work needed, or should have accepted the undramatic results of their study.
3) Sociological research peers would appreciate the researcher to conduct their own research and give credit where credit is due instead of plagiarizing ideas from others and sullying the reputation of the field.
4) The world community at large would appreciate the researchers setting a standard of high road conduct and not perpetuating ideas and behaviors that harm people.

That is pretty much it.

Ethical Issues In Sociological Research

It's not that they have to follow a code of ethics, but as they do anything "un-ethical" the possible "victim" will sue for damages.

I guess some folks would say it's un-ethical to call random people up and tell them their spouse was just killed in a car accident, - just to document their "heightened emotional state".
