W is a vowel when it blends into a word and makes a vowel sound. I am an elementary school teacher and I teach that the "sometime" vowels are...y, w and h. H is a vowel in the word "hour" as it makes a vowel sound rather than the traditional "h" sound.

>mazzygirl why y?
because of words like rhythm
I heard sometimes w, but wasn't taught that in school.
I can;t think of any case where that would be, but then maybe I don't know what a vowel is supposed to do?

I've never heard of w being a vowel before. But, after reading the link in Chuckie's post, it does seem very plausible. I think I'll go impress someone with my new found knowledge.
