Other than just loving it because its the best city in the USA...
1The Water Tower,
2 John Hancock Building,
3 Sears Tower,
4 The Wrigley Building,
5 The Art Institute
6 The Plaza in front of 401 N. Michigan (my Dad used to work in that bldg.), and the magic way the Wrigley bldg. reflects in its windows at night.
7 McCormick Center,
8 Shedd Aquarium,
9 Museum of Natural History,
10 Museum of Science & Industry
11 Holy Name Cathedral
12 the Ba'Hai Temple
Then there are the parks, the zoos, the university campuses, Lake Michigan beaches, all the great restaurants...
The wonderful christmas decorations in the winter...The Saint Patrick's Day parade (please someone tell me it still happens every year and do they still dye the Chicago river green???) The Fourth of July fireworks in all the towns along the lake front....
And the friends I left behind in Chi.
(There IS one thing I hated: the Chicago winter...the sleet & snow turned to gray slush on the streets covering the ice patches that make you slip n' slide, and the wind so bad it cuts your face and cuts off your breath as you try to cross the street at the corner of Michigan Avenue near the Water Tower!!!)
(But then, no place in this world is completely perfect!)

I've only been there once, but the top reason would be the friendly people. I guess I was thinking it would be like New York, but I found it to be much better in many ways. The next reason would be the cleanliness--New York was run-down and dirty. Then I liked the food--lots of variety and delicious. The theater offerings were almost as good as NY. The shopping was excellent. The museums were top-notch. The bus system was great. There were lots of sporting events--we went to a hockey game and had a wonderful time. The architecture was something I would have liked to experience by taking a boat tour on the river, but we ran out of time. And lastly, I felt safe in the city, and I really didn't in NY.

1) it's cleaner than we realize. i went to NYC one time and saw piles of garbage in front of people's homes, abandoned burned out cars on the express way, etc. It made me appreciate how clean Chicago is
2) Public transportation all day and night. Most other cities I've been to cut off their public transportation at 10, midnight, etc. Even NYC, "the city that never sleeps" cuts off bus service at night. With the exception of a few routes, Chicago keeps its public trnsportation going 24/7 so you can ALWAYS get home if your car conks out.
3) Bars stay open till 4 a.m, 5 a.m on weekends. Gotta love that. Granted, some bars you don't WANT to be in at 4 a.m. (or 4 p.m for that matter), but other place just start jumping at 1 a.m., 2 a.m. Old town ale house for example. and with that all night bus services, you can still get home.
4) two baseball teams. If one sucks, root for the other. And you get to see EVERY star in the game, not just the AL stars or NL stars.
5) The Lakefront. It's like having the best of both coasts. the hustle and bustle of NYC and the summer in the sun, sand between your toes of LA.
6) Parks. Chicago has parks scattered all over the place. So you can go from the loud horns, crowds of people of Michigan to the serene quiet of a park on the near west side in a matter of minutes and forget you're in the same city.
7) The street numbering system makes sense! Most cities have streets that seem as if a monkey on acid laid them out. Chicago's streets are laid out on a grid. So if you want to know where you are or what direction you're going in, look at the street numbers. if the numbers get higher in any direction, you know you're walking away from downtown. You can get your bearings in a snap.
8) Italian beef sandwiches. They were INVENTED here. They taste the BEST here. let philly put cheese on it, or someone else put cole slaw on it. nothing beats a Chicago italian beef, lightly dipped.
9) Neighborhoods. While it's not the best thing in the world to hae people segregated by nationality, there is something cool about going to a neighborhood and being in a whole new world. An Indian neighborhood, Chinese, Polish, German, Jewish, Mexican, Puerto Rican. etc.. You can go there and get the AUTHENTIC food, not some ripped off fake version.
10) winter. yeah, it gets fcukin cold here. But when it snows, there is nothing more peaceful than talking a walk along the bikepath. The snow muffles the sound and everything quiet. Nice.

You sooo gotta try Doug's Dogs.
It's a little tricky to get to (it's at California and Roscoe), but it's worth it.
After all, how many chances do you have to try ostrich, alligator, rattlesnake, or other wild game on a bun?
Duck fat fries on Fri and Sat are also damned good.
Catch is, he's only open from 10.30a to 4p,
