Having been on Yahoo! Answers for some time, I have found that some of the most profound questions have been treated lightly and rewarded with ridiculous, sometimes even hateful answers and nost cases 50 answers at most. Why then, does a question as silly as "How did eyebrows evolve...?" command over 3000 answers.

Because most serious people don't expect serious or sensible answers from a bunch of strangers. If you walked out into the middle of a crowded street, and yelled out "tell me the meaning of life", you'd get the same mix of sarcasm, stupidy, ignorance, ego, and intelligence that you get here. No reason to expect otherwise. Especially when responders are anonymous. Now they can insult you freely as well.

Accept this for what it is. An electronic street corner with a socially uninhibited crowd. Sort of like Mardi Gras. Heck, you even get to throw beads (points) at those who please you the most.

You make a good point. I've been going through some questions and I'm amazed by some of the answers. I believe that some people can't quite figure out how to answer the serious questions. They are to busy being absolutely ridiculous that they do not relies that not all the questions should be answered so lightly and then thrown aside for someone else to pick up the pieces and try to help the person asking the question out. Thanks for that! Your question is one of the most intelligent questions I've had this morning.

Because it is easier to answer the less sensible questions than to have to think, or search for information to answer the ones that really matter, or are more sensible as you state. I think too that the silly point system has a lot to do with it. If it weren't for the two points, some questions would not get answered at all. I think that we've become lazy, and sometimes things like Answers just helps us become more unindustrious.

Wow, I missed the question about the evolution of eyebrows. That sounds interesting, though I wouldn't want to wade through 3000 answers.

What I'm trying to say is that perhaps more people come here for entertainment than to be profound. That's not too surprising, since I suspect that the average age of participants is somewhere around 15,

Firstly, a lot of it depends on perception, what may be deemed as sensible to you, may seem inane to me.

Secondly, a lot of serious questions may also not command the attention it deserves as we already live in quite a serious world and may not be keen on pondering on more serious issues than we already do.

Thirdly, a witty answer, or an answer which mocks the issue may also have a surprising side to it as it may make the issue lighter, and probably also give us the perspective to deal with the situation with humour.

And lastly, when you court opinions just because your perception doesn't classify a response as noteworthy doesn't make it wrong, or light maybe the premise on which you base your opinion is also incorrect.

I've wondered that myself. I think that most of the younger people on here just don't have a clue as to how to answer the profound type of question. They have little life experience or references for them. And maybe the older people are just tired from working all day and don't want to deal with anthing heavy. Who knows? And to the person who answered above me--it's spelled, not spelt.

Not everyone answers in a 'silly' way. Some are just interested in banging up points..for what purpose you cant exchange them for anything like you could with green shield stamps. Some peeps do try and be helpful instead of unkind and sarcastic. I think it's the anonimity on here that makes them so flippant at times.

I think it's because most of the people who are intelligent enough to give a thorough answer have better things to do with their time. And don't forget, school's out for the summer...which means young whippersnappers everywhere you turn. If YA got rid of the point system, this place would probably be a haven for serious Q&A.

Because mankind is evolving into a greedy jealous and lazy race. Schools are for babysitting the kids now days, not for learning. That way both parents can work and pay for stupid stunts like G.Bush did with his bombing in Iraq(in the name of peace)So the lazy rude comments are from the byproduct of a badly ran greedy country(uneducated people)
