Go for the dual core. It is faster and more stable if you are like me who like to run many things in parallel.

The Athlon XP is an outdated CPU. Are you sure you're not referring to the Athlon 64 or the Athlon 64 X2? Realize that dual-core CPU's will have little or no effect on individual applications when run by themselves. Most apps (with some notable exceptions like Adobe Premeire) aren't written with multi-CPU platform support in mind.

With that said, dual-cores are still nice to have if you like to multi-task. For example, burning a DVD while playing a game is hard to do under even the fastest CPU single cores today. But with a dual-core, this is a piece of cake. The more you like to have open, the more it benefits to have dual-core.

Intel vs. AMD...

The argument that Intel is more stable than AMD is one that dates back to the days of the first Pentium versus the AMD K6-2.

Much has changed since then. It's all about your perception of both companies through advertising or magazine articles you've come across over the years. Truth is that there is no data available to lead anyone to believe that one is more stable than the other, based on the brand name itself.

Regarding dual-cores and overall speed...

AMD has had a commanding lead in this area following its release of the Athlon 64 and the Athlon 64 X2. Both set new and higher standards over the past 2-3 years. However, the tides are again beginning to change in Intel's favor. You can read all about it within the CPU section at:

An Athlon 64 X2 hands down. Each one kicks the crap out of each competing intel dual core chip. The X2 also runs cooler than the intels. Do a google on X2 reviews you'll see that the AMD X2 kills the intel in about every test they throw at them. I'm also a very happy owner of an X2.

Are you building a desktop or a laptop? The dual core is suppose to run cooler but the Athlon X2 runs faster according to most sites like Toms Hardware.

Also, take into consideration that x64 (dual-core) support for hardware and software isn't exactly perfect right now, so if you want to be able to run a lot of the programs you normally use right now, getting a dual core processor might make things a bit tricky. =)

I would choose intel dual core for its ability but if its for gaming, i recommend you to get the amd one..intel core has proven to be of a more stable series..

for the things that you do which are mostly dual tasking things like gaming the dual core would be best for you because it can optimize the things you do therefore improving speed and performance for the utilities you do
