Most defy!!! Heres Why!

Theory: The Avada Kedavra curse was not used on Dumbledore.

Justification: We know how the Avada Kedavra curse works. A flash of green light comes out of a wand and kills someone instantly with no outward marks.

From GOF: The Autopsy report on the Riddles Body

A team of doctors had examined the bodies and had concluded that none of the Riddles had been poisoned stabbed, shot, strangled, suffocated, or (as far as they could tell) harmed at all. …the Riddles all appeared to be in perfect health… The doctors did note (as though determined to find to find something wrong with the bodies)….US version Chapter 1 pg.

The Avada Kedavra curse does not throw or move someone. The fall where they are.

From GOF: Cedric’s Death

A blast of green light blazed through Harry’s eyelids, and he heard something heavy fall to the ground beside him… Cedric was lying spread-eagled on the ground beside him. US version Chapter 32 pg. 638

The spell used on Dumbledore worked differently.

From HPB: Dumbledore’s “death”

Harry’s scream of horror never left him; silent and unmoving, he was forced to watch as Dumbledore was blasted into the air. For a split second, he seemed to hang suspended beneath the shining skull, and then he fell slowly backwards. US version Chapter 27 pg. 596

To be blasted into the air and fall backwards would leave signs that muggles would pick up such as broken bones, cuts, and bruises. Cedric was not blasted into the air, nor did he fall backward.

The same person (Harry) saw both deaths, and his account is different.

From GOF: Frank Bryce's Death

There was a flash of green light, a rushing sound, and Frank Bryce crumbled. He was dead before he hit the floor. GOF Chapter 1 pg 15

Even an unbiased account shows someone crumples where they stand.

Special Note: Although “a jet of green light shot from the end of Snape’s wand,” HBP Chapter 27 pg. 596 and the Avada Kedavra curse is known for the green light, we do not know the wand light color for every spell. Therefore, the green light does not rule out all other spells.

The Headmaster is Alive

Theory: The Headmaster is alive but may be hurt.

Justification: There are many ways in the wizarding world to make someone look dead.

From SS: Draught of the Living Death

"For your information, Potter, asphodel and wormwood make a sleeping potion so powerful it is known as the Draught of Living Death. SS Chapter 8 pg 138

We are reminded of the Draught of the Living Death in book six. The first time Harry uses the Half Blood Prince’s book it is used to make it. HBP Chapter 9 pg. 188

From HBP: We can make you seem dead

"He cannot kill you if you are already dead. Come over to the right side Draco, and we can hide you more completely than you can possibly imagine. What is more, I can send members of the Order to your mother tonight to hide her likewise. Nobody would be surprised that you had died in your attempt to kill me -- forgive me, but Lord Voldemort probably expects it. Nor would the Death Eaters be surprised that we had captured and killed your mother -- it is what they would do themselves, after all. Your father is safe at the moment in Azkaban...When the time comes we can protect him too. Come over to the right side, Draco...you are not a killer..." Malfoy stared at Dumbledore. HBP Chapter 27 pg 591

Someone used a slowing spell on the Headmaster.

From HBP: Dumbledore’s Fall

“…he (Harry) was forced to watch as Dumbledore was blasted into the air. …he (Dumbledore) fell slowly backward…“ HBP Chapter 27 pg. 596

In POA, Dumbledore used a slowing spell on Harry.

POA: Hermione’s Account

“He (Dumbledore) ran onto the field as you fell, waved his wand, and you sort of slowed down before you hit the ground. POA Chapter 9 pg. 180

Fawkes did not try to save Dumbledore. We know Fawkes can save Dumbledore. He did it in the past.

From OOTP: Fawkes saves Dumbledore

... one more jet of green light had flown at Dumbledore from Voldemort's wand and the snake had struck -- Fawkes swooped down in front of Dumbledore, opened his beak wide, and swallowed the jet of green light whole. He burst into flame and fell to the floor, small, wrinkled and flightless. OOTP Chapter 36 pg. 814

Fawkes could leave the Headmaster’s office.

From HBP: Fawkes’ song

They all fell silent. Fawkes's lament was still echoing over the dark grounds outside. HBP Chapter 29 pg 621

J.K. Rowlings uses the Phoenix the symbolize Dumbledore. The phoenix is a symbol of resurrection.

Who knows. Like someone said before, if Rowling did bring Dumbledore back, it wouldn't be original at all. (Poor Gandalf)

My thoughts are open. For one, in the 5th book, it talked about how the department of Mysteries were studying about the afterlife. So it may be possible that the department could revive Dumbledore back to life.

But there is a counter argument to that. Lately, Harry Potter has been under the gun for it's themes about witchcraft and such, as some church leader who I can't remeber said. But he also said that the Harry Potter series encouraged such morals as bravery, love and trust. Anyway, to revive someone just may be stepping over the boundary a bit, considering the circumstances.

Or
(The more believable outcome)
Dumbledore just stays dead.

Who Knows?

Yes, Dumbledore is indeed dead. He was blasted with the killing curse and fell of the astronomy tower. Come on people, did you read Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince or not? I felt that the chapter about Dumbledore's funeral was written with such passion and closure.. It would be extremely cheap if J.K. Rowling were to come back in book seven and be like, "Gotcha, everyone! Dumbledore's alive and here do pilot Harry's adventure for him! Sorry for making all of you hardcore fans upset!" If Dumbledore were to come back in the last book of the series, I would be very disappointed. Harry needs to go out on his adventure by himself.
If you are not convinced, here are some other reasons:

1. If Dumbledore did not die, why didn't Snape from breaking the Unbreakable Vow with Narcissa Malfoy? Snape would die if he broke his promise to protect Draco. If Dumbledore were still alive, that would contradict Snape's vow.

2. What do you say about Dumbledore's portrait? J.K. Rowling specifically mentions a portrait of his being hung in the office with all the previous headmasters and headmistresses. In the Potterverse, they are only of dead people.

3. MOST IMPORTANTLY, JKR SAID SO. In an interview by Emerson Spartz and Melissa Anelli, J.K. Rowling responded to "The wise old wizard always dies," with "That's what I'm basically saying, yes." J.K. Rowling wouldn't lie to us. If she said he's dead, he's dead.

For those of you who believe that Dumbledore is alive, you may need to go back and do some re-reading.

Also, please read the link in my sources. It is an excellent essay about Dumbledore's death from leakynews.com.

He's dead, dummy. This is a huge change in plot, and JK Rowling will not take it back! Harry knows that all his protectors are gone, and he has to use his talent, alone. It would stink if he came back, because then Harry would be sheltered and Voldemort would win. I like Dumbledore, but rest assured, he wanted to die for a reason. There is proof he's dead (Snape would be dead if Dumbledore wasn't because he made the unbreakable vow to finish Malfoy's job.), and like he had said before, "No spell can reawaken the dead."

He's probably not coming back in "life" form, meaning coming back to life or anything, but there will probably be some mention of him or some kind of surprising entry by him in a non-human form...probably as one of the portraits in the headmaster's chamber at Hogwarts of all previous headmasters.

If he does, then I think someone should sue Rowling for stealing Tolkein's ideas.
