Involves removing as much as possible of female genitalia using a blunt razor blade. Then the victim is stitched together so that only a very small hole is left for urine & menses.

The man then literally rips her open years later for sex.

Female genital mutilation (FGM) is the term used to refer to the removal of part, or all, of the female genitalia. The most severe form is infibulation, also known as pharaonic circumcision. An estimated 15% of all mutilations in Africa are infibulations. The procedure consists of clitoridectomy (where all, or part of, the clitoris is removed), excision (removal of all, or part of, the labia minora), and cutting of the labia majora to create raw surfaces, which are then stitched or held together in order to form a cover over the vagina when they heal. A small hole is left to allow urine and menstrual blood to escape. In some less conventional forms of infibulation, less tissue is removed and a larger opening is left.

The vast majority (85%) of genital mutilations performed in Africa consist of clitoridectomy or excision. The least radical procedure consists of the removal of the clitoral hood.

In some traditions a ceremony is held, but no mutilation of the genitals occurs. The ritual may include holding a knife next to the genitals, pricking the clitoris, cutting some pubic hair, or light scarification in the genital or upper thigh area.

This is a subject that is hard to listen to. In parts of the World female genital mutilation is practised for the purpose of keeping young girls pure for marriage. Northern Africa is one place. Basically it involves cutting away the hood or the clitoris and removal of the head of the clitoris. This caused decreased feeling in the area. In some areas the opening to the vagina is sewn shut with only a small opening for menstrual flow to come out.The future husband will cut the thread. These practises are illegal even where they happen but are still widely used. They are done by women of the village to 8-10 year old girls without anaesthetic. A terrible pracise that needs to be stopped.

Read the books by Waris Dirie. She fled from Somalia because she was mutilated at a young age. She became a top model in Europe and is now fighting against this horrific crime against women.

I quote: "at age five, her mother held her down while a local woman cut away her genitals. Afterwards, she was stitched up tightly, leaving a hole the diameter of a matchstick."

The clitoris and sometimes the labia(lips) are cut off in an attempt to keep women from getting pleasure from sex. This is done by tribal ritual and the women go along with it to keep their status. Some girls as young as 5 years old are cut and are unable to urinate or have proper bowel movements for the rest of their lives from the cutting and have horrible infections.

It can also consist of having the vulva sewed together and just a small opening left for the passage of menstrual blood and urine. This is to preserve the honor of a girl or woman and her family from dishonor from her having premarital sex. Sex for the woman is very uncomfortable. A middle-eastern man once told me that he "had to fight for it" because it hurt his wife so much.

This is a religious procedure. Many Muslim families still send their young daughters back to their homeland to have the procedure performed.
