Open your eyes and realize that life is too short to be sad. You don't have to sad if you don't want to. I would undertsand your melancholia, if for example, you have recently dealt with a family member who has died. But really, you must find the source of the depression and fix it. Simple. Now, I have never gone through any such depression, as I am only 16, and have led a so far, happy life. If I ever did feel depressed, that is how I would approach it. Don't ever take antidepressants. They will only worsen things. Your body will become addicted to them, and you will see antidepressants as your "only way out" so to speak.
Good Luck!

There are quite a few ways of treating depression. The two main ones are a combination of counselling and medication. Proper diet, enough sleep and the effective management of stress are all factors too. Proper clinical depression is rarely cured only controlled and managed. Indogenous depression is the result of some kind of trauma like divorce or the death of a loved one and in time it will normally subside.
There are three main types of medication. They are tri-cyclics, MAO's and SSRI's. There are dozens of different meds in each category and it can sometimes be a bit of a job to find one that suits the individual. Trial and error is the only way. It is well worth it to persevere because once you have found a good medication you will feel so much better and there will be virtually no side effects. Tri-cyclics are the old fashioned anti-depressants and they tend to have the worst side effects. Mono Amyl Oxidase inhibitors (MAO's) work be not switching the serotonin off in the brain when it has been transmitted across the synsapse of one neuron to another so the brains seratonin is increased at a general level. This results in a marked lessening of the depressed state. Synaptic Seratonin Re-uptake Inhibitors (SSRI's) work slightly differently by focusing the seratonin and preventing resurgence in the synaptic gap. The effect on the depressed state is the same as the MAO's.Don't be afraid of meds see your Doctor and it is just a question of the right pill for you and you will soon start feeling much better. First off, Paxil is the worse side-effect giving medication I have ever tried. If you don't want to take a medication, then don't. Depression is simply a state of mind. I have been "depressed" for years. I don't believe it to be a real emotion. I think all emotions are are a state of mind and can be eliminated by seeking things that make you happy, and that get you out of the cycle you are in.
The only person that can do it is YOU! please remember this!
I wish you the best of luck!

Here is something to think about. Maybe it will strike a chord with you, or maybe not.
Are there any moments when you don't feel depressed? I'm sure there are. If so, then try to focus on the fact that at every moment in your life, the only real time that exists is right NOW, this very moment. If you can enjoy this moment now, then what about the next moment, and the next .... The point is that we get depressed because all of our energy is focused on the future, which doesn't exist yet, or on the past, which cannot be changed, and not on this one truly unique moment that is now. And in each moment of now, you can choose to smile and be happy. Maybe you can't decide to be happy for a whole day or week, but you CAN decide to be happy right now, just for this moment. And this one. And this one..... And every one. Depression is a trick of the mind in which you see things in a way which is really not true. Try to make your present moment a happy one. Smile.

The herb called St.John's Wort! It has worked for me for many years without the side effects caused by prescription drugs. It is also less expensive than prescription medicine. The only major concern / possible side effect is that St.John's Wort does thin the blood & it is recommended that people already taking some type of blood thinner NOT to take St. John's Wort. Only other precaution noted to be is to STOP taking St. John's Wort 2 weeks before any scheduled surgery due to the thinning of the blood by St.John's Wort. You can purchase St.John's Wort at practically any drug around like Osco's , Walgreeen's, Target, Walmart, even Kroger and Martin's & other grocery stores; in the herb & vitamin section of the stores.

A simple recipe:
1 c. of Prayer
2 tbs. of Laughter via a good movie, a funny story.
3 tsps. of Positivity (positive friends, family, people, you get my drift)
5 tbs. of Imaginative Thinking via a fairytale, a cartoon (become a fancyfree child again in your mind)
Reach deep into your creative mind and draw a picture or sew a doll or something. No drug can treat depression. Only God and you together.
P.S. Go to Disney World or some other amusement park. If you can't afford to travel far, go for a walk in the park or to Chuck E. Cheese's.

It depends on what your doctor figures is the chemical imbalance (cause) for the depression. Of course, some doctors feel that depression is just a mental (not a physical) problem.
If your depression is due to low blood sugar, then diet alone can treat it. For basic information on low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), check out www.hufa.org.
