I always used to ask my Saudi students why it's called the Middle East (even they call it that.) No one ever knew. It's really a colonial holdover, from the days when "the sun never set on the British Empire.
There's the "Far East" (farthest from the United Kingdom), the Middle East, and what used to be called the Near East (but that's a designation that underwent some changes.

Generally speaking, the Middle East extends from Turkey to, but does not include India. On the west side, the Mediterranean Sea would also be a border. Whether Israel and Turkey are part of the Middle East or not are debatable; as would be the inclusion of countries like Georgia.
