The fan in my laptop seems to be busted. There is this really loud noise coming on but no air is blowing on the side and every now and then, the computer will just shut down when it gets really hot (I believe that's the connection!). Could I possibly just change the fan myself?

Replacing the fan itself is not a big deal, its just one connector on the system board and a couple of screws but it does require dismantling most of the laptop. Depending on the warranty you may want to have Dell do it or if you feel comfortable with taking the laptop apart have them send it to you. If the laptop is not under warranty anymore you can try buying a fan from Dell. If they don't sell the fan anymore you should still be able to get the part number to find it somewhere else.

It is possible, given the fact that you are asking the question I am guessing that the warrenty is gone, otherwise you would void it by opening the case. Be very careful with laptop's. The connector's are very small and not as easy to disconnect and reconnect as they are in a pc. Most times the fan is part of the entire power supply, which is sometimes burried under other parts. Depending on your comfort level, it is possible and you can usually find the parts online. Be very careful.

CPU fans aren't too hard to replace. But you may have to flash the BIOS afterward. You can go to Dell's website to get the file.

BTW: It will damage your computer, and possibly destroy the processor or other components, to run it without a properly functioning cpu fan. Leave the computer turned off until you get it fixed. The overheating is most likely the cause of the shutdowns.

If your Dell is under warranty, then spend the extra you paid for that valid warranty and send it to them and let them fix it.

If your Dell has NO warranty, you can still fix the fan. Unplug the PC, properly use a grounding strap (found at any Radio Shack), and locate the fan. Jot down any information (brand fan, amp size...etc). And then log onto www.pricewatch.com and find a compatable fan.
