Jesus Christ, the son of God, gathered his disciples together knowing that it would be their last together. He washed their feet before the meal. Then they ate. After the meal, Jesus took the bread, blessed it, broke it, gave it to his disciples as a way in which they could remember him in the future. He then took the cup of wine, which represented the blood he would shed for all of us, blessed it, and gave it to his disciples as a symbol of his blood to remember him by. After the meal, he went to the Garden of Gethsemane, where Judas betrayed him

In the story, Da vinci code, there are certain things that are told about last supper than the answer you got. They say, there was no cup that jesus shared wine with. Its a controvertial story. Read it. You'll never look at the painting in the same way again.
