went through this on new years eve with our 4 yr. old male cat. he has had a uti twice--this last one was the worst. got him to the vet in time. was very expensive--1200.00--vet said could happen again--more so in males. and yes they end up having to be on special food. ours is on Hills Prescription Diet/feline for life! and it is very expensive--30.00 for a little 10lb bag. they also have canned food and it runs 1.25/can. but if you love your animals like we do moneys no object. you are lucky to still have your cat at such an advanced age!! good luck!!

Take a deep breath and relax. Your kitty is in excellent care with your vet. A UTI while painful, is not a life threatning illness. Even though your cat is a senior citizen, she should still make a full recovery from this. I have seen many older cats recover from UTI's and illnesses much worse. If you have any questions or concerns about her, call your vet tomorrow and have a talk with him/her, or with his vet tech. I'm sure they will be happy to answer all your questions.

It depends on the type of infection your cat has, older cats are prone to kidney problems so if your cat has an upper UTI (kidney involvement) it is in more strife than if it has a lower UTI (bladder and urethra).
Infections of the urinary tract are usually ascending, bugs get in from the outside and track up to the bladder and eventually the kidneys.
Your vet will most likely flush your cats kidneys (put her on fluids) and give her antibiotics to get rid of the infection. Your cat is in the right place and the best person to give you the answers to your question is your vet. He/She knows the case. It seems you haven't had all your questions answered so contact your vet with a list of questions and find out what your vet thinks the prognosis is, there is no point speculating, it will only drive you insane.

my male cat had this problem repeatedly, antibiotics help, but I would definetly recommend asking the vet for an extra weeks worth. Purina makes a food for this, Purina 1 urinary tract health. same ingredients as "prescription food" from the vet and half the price. Good luck!

She should be absolutely fine. UTIs are fairly common. With medication, I see no reason why she wouldn't recover. Of course I'm no vet, but if your vet doesn't think there will be a problem, there shouldn't be.

She will need to be put on a special diet. It's not costly though, so do not worry. It is just formulated to decrease the chance of re-occurance.
Despite age, there is always a chance of re-occurances, but many live the rest of their lives without it happening.
