Maybe they force us to be better people...they teach us patience compassion and tolerance. Also, sadly, we can see our problems more in perspective when we see how others suffer, and so we can experience gratitude. Some insane people are actually brilliant and talented...it's beautiful when that comes through. In my town, there's a thrift shop run by the mentally ill and the money they earn goes back into the community to provide mental health services. There are two other men who work at the grocery store and they are in charge of collecting the shopping carts from the parking lot and stocking shelves. These people may need to take medication and be supervised, but they live and work in our community and that's one of the things I like about living in this town.

You seem to have a fairly rigid view of sanity and insanity. Many people that history recognizes as genius' went through thier day to day existance with all the signs of being crazy...talking gibberish that no one can understand. Albert Einstien comes to mind as a perfect example...he acted totally crazy sometimes. The line between genius and insanity is very thin indeed. The fact that you call someone crazy does not make them crazy. I am sure that you could be judged as 'crazy' if someone examined your personal life close enough. Many of our favorite comedians would not be accepted as sane by common definition. A crazy person is someone that you personally do not understand. Insane people do awesome stuff all the time, but not under the label 'insanity'.

Insanity is a legal term though many people think of it as medical terminology. In a round about way I believe those considered "insane" can give back to society in some minute way. Some are extremely intelligent and can share knowledge by teaching, writing a book, or some other means. Seeing how they live such as in jail, in a halfway house, or in a mental health facility, it has to make one step back and realize how blessed your own life is. Those that are truly "insane" cannot be rehabilitated but they can be studied in order to better educate ourselves.

The second generation anti-psychotics make persons with schizophernia almost completely normal and able to maintain a job and relationship, if by insane you mean a person with Anti-Social personality disorder which a lot of those "psychopathic criminals" have then no there is no treatment for that they aren't very helpful in society they ignore rules and manupulate people.

not all insane people are useless. like back in the early 19's there was an insane man that can calculate taxes without using a calculator or also in the 19's there was a man that can play music on the piano just from hearing it

They keep us on our toes and remind us that we are not perfect. "Insane" people enjoy the simplest of pleasures, things that we often take for granted and overlook. Ever think what they may think about "sane" people?...must be pretty weird to them.
Who determines what sane and insane really is....

why of course! without these crazy people a lot of not-so-crazy people working in the psychiatry/psychology/rehabilitation/mental institutions will be out of work.
they OUGHT to be crazy because other people need to feed their families!
