For me I grew up on the East Coast reading the New York Times, then spent the last 30 years on the West Coast. The difference in style is so wide apart. The New York Times gives you and indepth look at news and articles from around the world, plus the best crossword puzzles, amazing magazine sections on Sundays. Plus have you ever read on a back of a book No.1 on the L.A. Times best sellers list, no. The New York Times Book Review has kept the world readers up to date on what is being published and who is reading what in the world. Serious newspaper readers will tell you that the only paper that even comes close to great articles is the Wall Street Journal.

The LA Times is for LA, while the NY Times is for NY. Both papers give national and international news (although LA is a bit more liberal), but the local section in the NY times is for NYC, while for LA, it's LA. In addition, the NY Times is far more prestigious and is read both nationally and internationally, while the LA Times is read primarily in LA.
