I don't think you realize that the "wage" that servers make in a good restaurant is usually far below minimum. The service they provide is what earns them the that tip. If the service is bad pay the minimum to cover it 10%. However, if the service is exceptional, show your appreciation buy giving a "bonus" just like most good employers do, 20% at least is average. If you really liked the job they did, then the sky is the limit. Just remember, that is how they make their living. They don't work for the restaurant, they work for you.

I have been a bartender / server for many years. I like to look at how much I make in tips as a law of averages with one common factor; I give the best possible service to everyone with the same positive attitude without pre-judging anyone. Sometimes from the people you least expect will do very well with appreciating your quality of service. So with this in mind, in America the standard practice should be recognised; 15% of the total bill before discounts, for average service. Up to 20% of the total bill for excellent, friendly, accurate service. Keep in mind at very fancy places, full service, you are not just tipping the person you give the money to. When I worked at a 5 star resturaunt in HI. I would tip 16% of my total tips to a busser, 16% to a foodrunner, 10% to the bartender, $7 to the stocker, and $7 to the host. Approx. 45% of my total tips would go out to the silent and unbeknownst to the customer to make all our worlds' go round. My paycheck was always a big fat $0. All the hourly wage went to taxes. So next time you go out to a resturaunt and your server is doing everything in their power to make your experience awesome and fun. Do the right thing and show your appreciation for your server and the rest of the people behind the scenes and tip 15% - 20%. Its' what makes the world go 'round. Maybe some day you'll have a job where tips or commisions are how you make all of your money and you'll be on the karma side of life.
HAPPY KARMA TO YOU!!!!!!!!!!!

Really it should not be this way. The servers should not have to depend on tips. The business should pay a good wage and adjust their prices to cover it. I hate to have to grade someone for a tip. I would like to just go in a place knowing how much it cost and go on my way not have to add an extra 15 or 20 % on top of the already high price.
One of my exes was and still is a server and they do not get paied enough for the crap the put up with. You get a bunch of hell raisers or drunks in a place and the give the server hell. Then they make a big mess and leave no tip. On top of this the owner makes them open up one day and the next they have to close down and they get pissed if they want a day off after walking double shifts for the past two weeks.
No servers do not get paied enough. But it still should not be the public to adjust for a greedy business owner. Do you really think Applebees is broke and can only aford to pay them 2 dollars an hour? Now that was a joke. They are the kind of people who don't ask prices and just say I want that. get it now. Money is not a worrie to them. These guys make more money in a day then the rest of us make in a year. I make more in a year then most make in a couple of years and I know how well they are paied. I am a poor boy if I was compaired to them. A buddie of mine built a bar with help from freinds free labor. That was 4 years ago and he takes in for his part well over 20 grand a week for his take home pay. Guess how much he payes his help. .As little as he can. He bitches and don't understand why they rip him off .. well their kids are hungary is why.. not his problem huh?

Although we work in the restaurant business does not mean we make a lot of money, unfortunetly our employees don't pay much for us to serve you,why they get away with this not sure but if i am doing my job right and doing right by you then it would be to get a tip, the same thing happens when one gets there hair done at a salon or even a door man gets a tip. Anywho if it wasn't for all of us people who are willing to do these jobs then where would everyone go for dinner besides all these fast food places, don't you think it's nice having someone bring you your dinner. I know as a person who had the experience to wait on people in restaurants and bartend and did ones hair and so on. I too want to have someone wait on me and as long as the service is good they get a tip gladly and if the service is not then let management know.

The wage for a server is only $2.13 an hour...that is why they should get a tip (as long as they give great service). Minimum wage keeps going up, but server pay has stayed the same for years!!! I know this because that is what I do for a living. If you can't tip someone who waits on you, then you should eat at home or fast food!

If you are not getting a tip I suspect it is because you are a lousy waitress. If you do not like it this is America and you have the choice to get a job that pays you what you deserve , albeit I think you are probably getting paid what you are worth. It sounds like you are quite immature with the Mc Donalds comment. I can tell you I never tip a waitress based on what you have pointed out . I tip based on service and service alone not on friendly unwanted chatter or photos of your kids pinned to your chest. I am betting that when you applied for the job they told you would be waiting on people and that your tips would be based on your attitude and how well you do you job. Maybe you ought to be the one to take a job at Mc Donalds where the rest of the cry babies work.

If tips are a right, then restaurants need to charge a service charge on the bill and give that to the server. (In parts of Asia, restaurants charge a service charge, but they don't give it to the server, which really sucks for them.) If tips are a privilege, then it's the customer's right to choose how much. Good etiquette means 15% for adequate service. However, as a customer, I reserve the right to not tip anything if the server is rude or service is very poor. Even with bad service, I typically tip a little.
On the other hand, if a customer who was given adequate service and still did not tip, then I think the restaurant has the right to refuse service to that customer if he/she returns.

Some people do not know $2.13 Hr. is your wage.few have insurance though work, some have to pay full price for food and Drink. and that's the legal ones.some only pay a dollar an hour plus kitchen prep, dishes not paid the hour.
You have a family ,taxes,insurance,school,rent/house payment ,car ex pence food and taxes too! Pharmacy ex pence, uniforms shoes etc.
they often get no encouragement. praise.
On their behalf the food cost are often so high they feel the company should pay a living wage from their charges. They don't know the taxes, license,Franchise fee, taxes, morgage, repairs, salary for good management, lot cleaning parking area.

It's bad form to not leave a tip when eating out. The reason servers make such low hourly wages is because thy get tips. Besides after you have asked for napkins, and four drinks and sent back your food then realized you needed more sauce don't you think they deserve a little something. :-)
