I was a plumber's helper. My father owned a plumbing business and only had 3 daughters, no sons. So all of his children started as plumber's helpers when we reached the age of 12. It was kind of dirty, but a lot of fun. We got to solder pipes and spread cement and stuff like that. But trust me, when I reached age 16 and got a job in a supermarket, it seemed like cleanliness heaven.

holding up a sign at the end of a gas line in the early 1970's that said 'Last Car Today'. The owner compensated by allowing my father to park his car at the pump the night before his 'day' to get gas [there was an odd-even rule about when you were allowed to get gas based on your license plate].

I worked as a cashier at Target for a whole whopping $3.40 an hour, which at 16 was huge money to me. It wouldn't fill my gas tank to get to work, but I was getting a paycheck!

Salad girl in a large chain steakhouse. Because they couldn't stand seeing me idle, when I had enough salads made I had to keep the bathrooms clean. And then right back to salads!
